Leslie Johnson requests court delay

By Maria Glod

Prince George's Council member Leslie Johnson (D-Mitchellville) has asked a judge to delay her Feb. 16 hearing on federal evidence tampering charges, saying she needs more time to investigate the allegations.

"Ms. Johnson and her counsel have diligently investigated this matter, but given the magnitude of the allegations, she requires additional time to conclude that investigation," defense attorney Shawn M. Wright wrote in court papers filed in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt.

Johnson and her husband, former Prince George's County Executive Jack B.Johnson (D), were arrested in November amid a sweeping corruption probe in the county. FBI agents said in court papers that an investigation revealed that developers and others in the county had been "regularly providing things of value" to public officials in return for favors.

On Nov. 12, as FBI agents knocked on the door of the Johnsons' Mitchellville home, the couple were overheard on a wiretap plotting to flush a $100,000 check from a developer down the toilet and hide $79,000 in Leslie Johnson's bra, according to court papers.

Leslie Johnson, who was elected to the County Council on Nov. 2, has retained her seat. The council in December took the unusual step of barring her from sitting on any comittees, where dozens of key decisions are made. The council agreed she may attend committee meetings and vote on bills that come before the full nine-member body.

Rome, who could not immediately be reached for comment, said in court papers that prosecutors do not oppose delaying the preliminary hearing until March 16.

Jack Johnson is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 16.

We cabn expect Mr. Johnson's attorney to request another delay as well. What is there for her/their attorney's to investigate? We've seen this judicial stalling tactic before when it comes to criminal charges against public figures. The stragedy is, the further the public gets away from the incident the less serious it will seem, the less attention it will be given and the more it will be forgotten. So when the court date finally comes there will be any real outrage and the charges will be reduced and quietly disposed of.

They just want more time so that she can serve on the Council for a bit longer before going to jail. They were nabbed dead to rights, can't imagine it takes much more investigation. The wiretap, if legal, nails them to the wall. They need to be thrown in jail and throw away the key...

If Leslie Johnson did the honorable thing, as most of her constituents wanted--as as the rest of the county's voters wanted as well--she'd have resigned from the Council just do she WOULD have enough time to deal with her personal legal problems.

The fact that she didn't resign shows a distinct lack of ethical understanding--precisely what she's accused of. Undermined her whole implication that she's honest, honorable, and ethical.

She'll try to delay it until hell freezes over.

She's reported to be awaiting delivery of new, larger-size bras.

She will always be Lady Bra Johnson to me!
Guess she'll look good in orange, or maybe stripes...

"She's reported to be awaiting delivery of new, larger-size bras"

lol.

She probably wants to get a few more months in on the council to show what a "great job" she is doing for her constituents.

Again, people who were in power having a hard time feeling like the everyday person and letting their arrogance go...both Johnson's will learn humility as the feds have them dead to right...patience people, patience....
