Two life sentences, no parole for woman who killed girls, kept bodies in freezer

Renee Bowman, who was convicted in February of killing two of her adopted daughters and stuffing their bodies into a freezer, was sentenced Monday to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Bowman, who was also convicted of abusing the two dead girls and a third adopted daughter who survived, also received 75 years for the child abuse from Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Michael J. Algeo.

A Calvert County court had sentenced Bowman to 25 years in prison for the abuse of the third daughter.

Algeo, who at times appeared emotional on the bench, called Bowman's actions "horrific, reprehensible and despicable," saying, "You tortured these children."

Bowman, who did not speak during her trial, spoke for about a minute Monday, apologizing for and acknowledging the child abuse.

"It haunts me," she said. "It haunts me every day." The statement came after her defense attorney maintained -- as was the case during the trial -- that she did not kill the girls.

Bowman didn't show any visible emotion during the proceedings. When she did speak, she was soft-spoken and polite.

Algeo took note of that -- but also called the case the worst he'd seen in 25 years in Montgomery County as a prosecutor, defense attorney and judge.

Referencing a statement that came up during the trial that Bowman had asked a friend if God forgives you if you do something really bad, Algeo said "This might be God's test case."

Bowman's third daughter survived what prosecutors described as a nightmare of beatings and torture. Her testimony helped convinced jurors to convict Bowman.

She is now living with a foster family in Calvert County.

TWO MURDERS 25 YEARS....I hoped for the death penalty. Disgusting way to spend my tax dollars to feed and house this animal.

Now is the time to sentence this witch to many, many years under the cement at the prison and to never look back.

You meant HOG..They need to sentence her to a pig pen..If they can find one that can house her

A death sentence is what people like her want. To just disappear and be done with it. Life without the possibility of parole is better because I believe you wish you WERE dead when those words hit your ears and finally sink in, but you're not, and you have to face every single day of it. Now if she happens to get slaughter in prison then so be it. She'll get to experience a little of what the girls went through.

I think we need to start allowing prisons to use biological methods for executions. I think injecting a death row inmate with amoebic dysintary or Ebola and letting them suffer to death would be an excellent deterrent to crime.

I hope this HOG dies a slow, excruciatingly painful death.

Reading this story makes my stomach hurt, how sorry is she really? And why on earth does my tax dollars have to support this bit... for the rest of her life and mines. This is a clear case of the deaf penalty..after all that is what it is for!!

Its a shame, that this "MOTHER" didn't get the same sentence, she gave her daughters.

Maybe if they house her in General Population, or give her the Ronnie White cell, we can have justice in this case.

Why not harvest her vital organs to use in transplant surgery for law abiding citizens before she gets put to death? At least that way she is of some use to society. If this is not possible why should she get "3 hots and a cot" ,free medical care, etc for the rest of her life?!! I can think of more useful things my tax dollars could do!!

Inject her with the Ebola virus and lock her up in solitary confinement.

Wire her jaws shut so she can't eat. Let her starve to death.

I'm glad she didn't get the death penalty. I think its highly appropriate for her to have to rot in jail for the rest of her life, to have to know what put her there, and to have to think about it every day, all day, for the rest of her life. Maybe what she did doesn't bother her, but she still has to know that she got caught and is being punished for it.

She is not an animal and does not deserve to be debased in any way.

As a sentient human being she deserves to pay the price that she demanded of her little victims, consciously, and with the full awareness that we are taking a human life in payment and retribution for the ones that she willfully took.

We should not dehumanize "the other" - in fact, we should emphasize their humanity (and the humanity of their victims) because it keeps the focus on the terrible nature of the crimes they committed and keeps us from enjoying capital punishment too much.

I don't think that we should shirk from capital punishment, only that we should resist the very common totalitarian urge to associate humans with vermin.

Aslong as we are going to pay for her to live out her natural life at taxpayers expense, then why not put this fat hog in a walk-in box for twenty-three hours a day and set the temp at around twenty degrees. Cant do 24 hours because that would be cruel and unjustful punishment. Montgomery County is just too lenient...

@ tmschlitzer

Amen brother! (Or sister!)

It's amazing to see how quickly people resort to that kind of demagoguery here. She deserves life in prison, of course. But suggesting she's not human is only designed to make us feel better.

It's a lot scarier to admit that someone who could do what she did is in fact as human as any of us.

Boy oh boy. This lady made one or two little mistakes and the next thing you know, people treat her like she's a crazy lady or a mass murderer or something.

tmschlitzer ~ it really is too easy to find that this woman is not really human ~ but it's pretty easy to guess she was a registered Democrat.

Not to politicize this too much but over here on the Virginia side of the river we have a much lower crime and murder rate. We attribute that to two things ~ NO PAROLE and a healthy execution rate.

If the people in DC don't want to live in a civilized society they should realize that if you keep this kind around you will get more of them.

Frankly, she's so coldblooded she'll probably kill someone else in prison ~ a white collar criminal, a guard, a visitor ~ it'll be someone ~ and unless someone is willing to strap her down to a table 24/7 and feed her through tubes that will happen.

Keep her alive puts someone else to death.

Excuse please ~ delete DC. Insert MD. Same place as far as this deal is concerned.

Posted by: muawiyah | March 22, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

It is hard to understand how the abuse continued for so long before getting caught. Don't worry, she'll get her's in prison. Frankly, I'm much more worried about the surviving daughter - if our government doesn't pay for intensive counseling for her she will have big problems later on. Thus the cycle continues...

@muawiyah Brilliant deduction! Obviously by freezing the bodies she gave away her democratic registry. You should fight crime. Quick, like a bunny, drive down to Blackburg and ask the people there if they feel the death penalty prevented any hideous murders lately.

@tmschlitzer Very well put.

Now I do the Troll Dance! Troll Troll Troll. Yell Yell Yell. Troll Troll Troll. You are dumb. I am right. More right than you. Cause you are wrong. Wrong and dumb. Troll Troll Troll. Stink Stank Stunk. Extreme mouth foam. You hate me and must comment. Troll Troll Troll, Troll Troll...

@muawiyah "it really is too easy to find that this woman is not really human ~ but it's pretty easy to guess she was a registered Democrat."

Say what? What does her political stance have to do with anything and how does killing her kids make her a Democrat? Did she show you her voter registration card?

Geez! Some people just jump wayyyy out there!!
