Howard officer hospitalized after crash

By the Associated Press

A Howard County police officer has been hospitalized after police say a driver ran a red light and broadsided his police cruiser.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. Monday in Columbia.

Police say 49-year-old Philip Vu of Silver Spring ran a red light at the intersection of Columbia Road and Little Patuxent Parkway.

His SUV struck a police cruiser driven by Pfc. Kirk Brown, an eight-year veteran of the department.

Brown was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Police say Vu had been drinking. He was not injured in the crash. No charges have yet been filed.
