Man dead after Manassas standoff

An armed man barricaded alone in a Manassas hotel room since Wednesday night was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday afternoon, police said.

A Virginia State Police SWAT team entered the room about 4:20 p.m. and found the body of 50-year-old John C. Carlson Sr., who was wanted for a probation violation, said a Manassas police spokesman, Sgt. Tim Neumann.

Neumann said Carlson was armed with a pistol and possibly another weapon. But he said police did not hear a shot.

He said the SWAT team was able to surreptitiously insert a tiny camera lens into the room and saw Carlson's body face-down on the floor, which prompted officers to enter the room.

Carlson locked himself into a room at the Home Style Inn at 9913 Cockrell Rd. after arguing with a female companion in the parking lot, said Neumann.

The hotel was cleared of patrons and a perimeter was set up blocking people from getting too close, police said.

The SWAT unit threw gas into the room overnight to try to force Carlson out but he didn't budge, Neumann said. Carlson fired shots through a window and the door “a few times” overnight, he said.

Police were dispatched to the hotel shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Once they arrived, Carlson ran into a room and shot out the windows.

Send in Snooki, he'll come running out and even beg to get shot.

Waiting him out? The police overtime already expended is worth more than he's worth. So, what's he got for ammo? Ten rounds tops? This is an excellent target practice opportunity. Let the whole police force pump a few hundred rounds into that place. If they happen to dispatch the scumbag to the great beyond, so be it.

Ok...really?? All this nonsense and the man has no hostages or ANYTHING?? Just SHOOT the moron and be done with it!! ugh...whatever...

I'm sorry this ended this way, but I'm glad the police had the compassion to try to wait him out. "Blowing away" someone who is likely suicidal and obviously not mentally stable is not justified if no one is in immediate danger.

To those of you who posted comments you certainly have the right to express your opinion but you didn't even know the guy or the situation he was in. What if he was someone in your family or a good friends family? Would you be so cruel and insensitive? I knew John and he had a good heart and soul. He certainly had his problems but they were all created from drug and alcohol use. He was kind and considerate and always made you laugh. During the snowstorms we had he stayed out for hours and hours in the bitter cold with no gloves on shoveling peoples cars out that couldn't help themselves. He loved his family and has left behind a wife and son. The last text his son received said "I love you." It breaks my heart to know that he is gone. I had a issue with John but I found out today that he was looking out for my best interests'. Think about what it must have felt like to pull that trigger? The desperation he was in. He tried several times to get help but it just didn't work out for him. I hope this reaches some of you and maybe you will think before you comment next time. Rest in Peace John..........

Thanks nojomal for your kind post telling us something about this man. Indeed, it does make a difference when we realize that we are making indifferent comments about someones husband, father, or loved one.

If you know him so well "nojomal" then wouldn't you know he has two sons? They were both present at the scene when I was out there on Tues/Wed...TWO SONS, only one was willing to provide any information to reporters. The other was upset and kept his mouth shut. So NOJOMAL stop pretending you are somebody.

does it matter that nojomal didnt know he has two sons? really? the fact is they knew him and i can confirm it because i knew john and i know nojomal as well. people should keep dumb comments to themselves and focus on the fact that johns family is in alot of emotional pain and need to consider their feelings.

Wow, just wow, some people are incredibly sick. You no nothing of the man and you just trash him, really? I sincerely hope that when your family member has addiction and/or mental health issues, no one goes after him like some of the previous posters.

First, John Carlson was no saint. He suffered from mental health issues his entire life. He had many demons in his life including alcohol and drugs but he was not a bad man. He had a great heart and an addicted brain. He struggled with his substance abuse issues for 30+ years.

I have been personally involved with the family since 1995 and I can tell you that John was a very tortured individual, with a tortured life. Despite his shortcomings, loved his sons, John Jr and Josh and they knew it.

Next time you piss on someone's grave, make it your own father's not these two greiving boys!!!!!!!!!!
