Manassas teacher accused of sexually assaulting student

An English teacher at Osbourn High School in Manassas City was arrested Thursday and charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student at the school, Manassas City police said Friday.

Police learned of the possible inappropriate conduct on Tuesday, investigated and then obtained warrants charging Kevin G. Ricks, 49, of Federalsburg, Md. with aggravated sexual battery, carnal knowledge and two counts of indecent liberties while in a supervisory position.

Sgt. Tim Neumann of the Manassas City police said Ricks was taken into custody Thursday evening, and was being held without bond in the Prince William County jail.
The inappropriate conduct occurred in December and January, Neumann said, at a home in Manassas City.

Ricks has taught at Osbourn for three years, Manassas City schools spokeswoman Al Radford said. She said he had been placed on administrative leave without pay, and that counselors would be made available for students as needed.

This guy will (and should) be nailed to the wall and serve a long sentence. His bad luck to me a man. Given the double standard of the U.S. judicial system, if he were a woman, he (she) would just get a slap on the wrist (if even that) for the exact same crime.

with the massive mcdonnell budget cuts facing education in virginia events like this will be what passes for an "after-school activity".

Student was a boy or girl? I don't see that. None of this was going on back in the 70's when I was in school. Believe me, it would have been HUGE NEWS. Not really worth it. Going to cause problems for him later in life no matter how it turns out.

The charges were made from a boy. This is also still alleged and could be completely untrue. Mr.Ricks as I new him was a good man and I have a hard time believing this is true.

Why do you always try to create some backwards argument that does not apply to the situation in a lame effort to protect the fragile ego of a loser white male. Its always if he were black he would go free, if he were a woman they would get a slap on the wrist. How about this, if he were white and did it he should get what he deserves. Leave your poor white guy never gets a break lame rhetoric for the klan meeting later on tonight.

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? The alleged victim may have some agenda that hasn't been brought to light yet.
Regardless, the stigma attached to this type of accusation will remain with the teacher for the rest of his life.

Why are these teacher/priest child sex assaults always committed by men on boys? Was the teacher gay?

Charges could be true, or maybe the charges are not true. I worked with teachers who were accused of such abuse; two were falsely charged it turns out; two were guilty with one of those marrying the abused after she graduated from high school. (He still broke the law when she was in school.)
One of my wife's favorite high school teachers was 'seeing' a classmate; their marriage lasted 25+ years until his untimely natural death.

What do you expect in an America where anything goes. Homosexuals have special rights and privaleges and WE are supposed to look up to THEM. A person like Barney Frank can hold public office with his well known perversions and everyone is afraid to speak up OR if they do speakout are shouted down by the political toadies of the Gay and Lesbial caucus. This people is just the beginning of the end and like Rome we will also fall as their society did when common decency and morals evaporated.

Innocent until proven guilty. Give the justice system a chance to work...

If these allegations are true, this behavior is not "inappropriate" as the Post refers to it - its criminal, illegal, and will forever haunt a young man. People need to stop downplaying sexual violence against children and abuse of minor children by referring to it as merely "inappropriate"

I go to this school and this man is def. one of the most liked teachers in the city. For those who dont know him, dont assume he is guilty. Innocent until proven guilty, as our constitution says. Don't jump to conclusions to criticize him harshly.

If I'm not mistaken, homosexuality was accepted in Rome (to a limited extent amongst the aristocracy) for nearly the entirety of its 2000 year history. Going by angryamerican's logic, we have a solid 1900 years to go before our society collapses. That's a pretty good run, so I think I can live with that. And the Athenians and spartans condoned the kind of sick behavior alleged in this article (seduction of student by teacher) and their societies lasted significantly longer than ours has even existed, so there may be no statistical correlation between moral decay and societal collapse.

Having said that, the behavior alleged in the article is unacceptable; we trust teachers and priests with the guidance of our children, and the perversion of that responsibility

needs to be investigated thoroughly and punished severely if proven.

You just might not want to take individual anecdotes and make sweeping historical generalizations when you don't know what you're talking about. If you want a better idea of what causes societies to collapse, you should read hated diamonds "collapse" or gibbons "decline and fall of the Roman empire".

Sexual abuse of minors gets downplayed because we've accepted a hyper-sexualized culture. Sex and the City defined the aspirations of a generation. The quest to legalize gay marriage defined the political definition of social liberation when gays are actually a tiny minority. If we as a society are willing to titillate ourselves night after night with naked female corpses on CSI while at the same time we willingly accept the overturning of thousands of years of marriage and family structure because of political agitation from a small minority, we can hardly be surprised if so-called responsible adults act out sick fantasies with minors. The message out there is clear: decency, morality and family are all relative terms to be defined however one cares to define them and the only "bad" person is the one who is troubled by these behaviors. Oh yeah, and smokers.

AngryAmerican411, I am confused as to why you are linking this story of child abuse to the struggle for equal rights for homosexuals in America. Would the child abuse have been okay with you if Ricks had allegedly molested a girl? It disgusts me that you will use any and all situations to publicy demonize the gay community. Was it the fault of the gay community that another Osbourn teacher, Ted Johnson, sexually abused a young girl back in 2008? Do the rest of the straight community a favor and get off the soap box. you make us look like back-woods idiots. And Calhern, I don't remember any episode of Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw wrote an article reminiscing about how she and the girls engaged in an all-lesbian-underage-gangbang. Exactly what aspiriations championed in that show did Ricks allegedy pursue? Let me see if I can follow your logic; Hypersexualized culture-Sex and the City-Legalized Gay Marriage-CSI-Ricks allegedly touches a kid. You must have missed the lecture on Syllogisms in Philosophy class. tool.
