Alleged serial stabber to return to Mich.

By Maria Glod

Former Northern Virginia resident Elias Abuelazam will be extradited Thursday to Michigan, where he is a suspect in a series of random stabbings, five fatal, according to authorities.

Abuelazam, 33, an Israeli citizen, also is suspected in unprovoked attacks in Leesburg and Toledo. The four victims in Virginia and Ohio survived.

Michigan State Police said Abuelazam, 33, who was arrested earlier this month in Georgia as he prepared to board a flight to Tel Aviv, is to appear in a Michigan court at 3 p.m. for arraignment. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton is scheduled to hold a press conference after the hearing.

The attacks began in Michigan in May. Authorities said the assailant approached men who were alone and often asked for directions or help with a car. Then he stabbed or slashed them without warning.

Abuelazam has been charged in one stabbing in Michigan, but authorities there said they think he fatally stabbed five men in the Flint area and slashed nine others. Leesburg police said he stabbed two men there and attacked a third with a hammer. He also is suspected of stabbing a man outside a Toledo church.

Sixteen of the victims were black, one was a dark-skinned Hispanic man and one was white. Leesburg police said they think the attacks there were racially motivated.

They don't mention that he is an Arab Israeli.

Ms. Glod,

What is the purpose of mentioning Mr. Abuelazam's citizenship in the second sentence? It is as irrelevant to the article as mentioning his ethnicity (Arab Christian) would be, which you did not do. By mentioning his citizenship alone, you either intentionally or unintentially promote a false impression that the suspect is Jewish, since Israel has a Jewish majority population.

If it is not your intention to inflame anti-Semitism here in the U.S., would you please explain why it is necessary in your article to parade his citizenship at the top of the article without any other details?

Thank you.

He was caught trying to board a flight to Israel. Taking advantage of immunity from criminal prosecution that Israel affords Jews.

Thanks for proving my point. Abuelazam is not Jewish!

...and we could only be so lucky if he went to Israel- I wonder how the Israelis would deal with a serial stabber in their land?
