Two D.C. men dead in late-night Prince George's crash

Two District men were killed Thursday night in a car accident as they fled police, Prince George's County Police said.

The chase began in the 7900 block of Central Avenue heading westbound after an officer from Fairmount Heights reported a gun being fired into the air from a car carrying five men, county police said.

Keith Lorenzo Gilmore, 20, of the 1300 block of First Street SW died at the scene of the crash at Addison Road and James Farmer Way.

Hasante Malik Carson, 19, of the 3000 block of Pineview Court NE, died Friday of injuries suffered when the car hit a utility pole.

Two of the remaining occupants were 18; a third was 19. Two had less serious injuries and one was not hurt, said Corporal Clinton Copeland, spokesman for the county police department, which is investigating the case.

A gun was recovered in the car, Copeland said. Police are still investigating the specifics of the alleged shooting.

The Fairmount Heights officer began pursuing the 2005 Pontiac with District plates, Copeland said. The officer lost sight of the car and dropped the chase but five minutes later officers from Capitol Heights and Seat Pleasant, who had heard the radio call, found the crashed car, said Copeland.

Initial police accounts said a Seat Pleasant officer began the chase.

I've only read that these teenagers were shooting out of a car and fleeing fromt the police. Maybe I missed the legislation that made either of both of these crimes punishable by death. I'm not against the instant assasination, be it right or wrong, of certain criminals (particularly those who harm children), but I really see it as unfair that the couple of comments here seem to condone the death of those two young men. I won't even play the race card here, though i'm sure that it could be played.

Posted by: dark_knight | March 26, 2010 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Hey dark_knight...I don't see anywhere race is mentioned. Kind of tough to play a card when it isn't there. Some punk kids thought it was a good idea to shoot off guns in public, flee from the police, and risk their lives as well as the people around them. I'm thankful those guys (whatever race they were) were killed instead of an innocent person who could have been hit by their car or a bullet...which is usually the scenario. The world is a better and safer place without them if they want to risk the lives of so many innocent people (of any race).

Coming from a person who grew up with the five Victims and being a high school graduate on the top of my class, now a freshman in college and doing a tremendous job, those weren't thugs those where innocent young males who were also high school graduates and where working and was setting positive examples to the young ones in our community. so for all you folks who are saying negative comments maybe you should get the full story on what went on before u start judging those innocent teen boys. My cousin wasn't a thug and for you ignorant people to call him a thug how dare u, and you are gonna go straight to hell and Burn. I will pray to GOD himself that he has Mercy on your Souls.

Posted by: mallen4 | March 26, 2010 3:18 PM | Report abuse

You're suggesting that those punks had a good reason to be shooting out of the car? Or were justified to be fleeing from the police? Really?! You chastise folks for being glad those thugs are dead without knowing the circumstances.....but the circumstances were stated in the article. And nowhere does it say the race of the punks in the car or the officers. Keep playing that imaginary card. And defending anyone who so poorly represents anyone's race, religion, ethnicity, culture, etc. is as sure a sign of ignorance as anything imaginable.

Posted by: davidreiss | March 26, 2010 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Why did your cousin have a gun? Why didn't your cousin pull over when the police tried to stop him?

Posted by: davidreiss | March 26, 2010 3:24 PM | Report abuse

One My cousin didn't have the gun it was one of his friends. Now granted he should have pulled over but because some other guys where shooting at them the young guy retaliated and police heard the gun fire and started chasing my cousin's car whom was driving. He was nervous and caused him to panic, he was afraid and scared for his life. He would never just start shooting off at someone and because this happened, to innocent people are dead because one took the initiative to start shooting putting not only my cousins life in danger but his own. Now i am not saying he is a bad teen for what he did, nor did he do the right thing but they were at the wrong place at the wrong time, So now my family, his family, friends, and loves ones have to deal wit this whole accident.

PublicEnemy1 you have to realize...

Time and time again whenever a story is presented about violent or crimminal activity the overtly racist comments come flooding in.

These comments may be rude and callous and disrespectful and maybe even infuriating to some degree but if you really stop and think about it - they are hilarious. I mean seriously these racist fools are so overt and audacious in the safety and security of cyberspace and the anonymity it provides but in the real world, in actual face to face correspondence these same supposed radicaly opinionated haters are just as cordial and condescending as can be with Blacks and Latinos so don't pay these fools no mind.

to all the negative commentators, keep it to yourself...regardless of what the situation was, you better hope that God have mercy and grace on your soul to give you another chance with you doing something in the positive community way (according to some). You never know so be careful how you place people and treat them. There is truly a lot of nerve on this page and again be grateful that you are being allowed to still be here on this earth. Some people do great things and still get taken away too soon so you never know so their situation is not the point here its the way you respond not knowing your day may be tomorrow just because of twisted minds.

Ah...well I don't see how it's ok to shoot at someone and then fail to stop when the popo tell you to stop. If that were my son, I would disown him until he grew up. So because some black people have it rough, that gives them all the right to kill each other and kill innocent people in the process? It's sad that their families have to deal with it now, but it's better that then innocent folks being killed if they hit another car or shot an innocent person. If their car had hit another car and killed a child, would you still be defending them? Think about the potential outcomes of your actions and accept the consequenses. Stop reinforcing negative stereotypes. And that goes for all races, religions, ethnicities, etc...

The negative comments are very sad to read.

Johnette Smith

Why do you inject God into the conversation. What does God have to do with 5 fools shooting off a gun and then fleeing from the police.

What if the police didn't come on the scene when they did. What if that stray bullet hit an innocent person? Then you're probably one of those people whose first comment is " that's terrible" .

When are people {especially us blacks) going to start taking responsibility for their own actions. It's always somebody else fault.

To mallen

Perhaps you should have prayed to God before they started to ride around in a car and shoot off a gun.

Boy some of this comments are a joke, if some of these kids today new how to fight instead of pulling a trigger maybe this would be a better place. Get in the game, these boys were just getting startd in life, the skin color dont mean nothing we all breath the same air dont we. I have to side with my man saying that some people hide behind a computer. If you're going to say something stand up and say it to that persons face. I have friends from all over and sometimes I dont agree but I say what I feel, not degrade some one because they are black. To reiterate: You did not even know them! They were someone's brother, someone's son, and Keith and Sante were friends to many.

Remember that you post these things behind some anonymous username. Cowards. Have some respect for the dead, even if you have none for yourself.

To the person that commented right before me, yeah they do deserve to still be here.

Wow at the lack of maturity I just witnessed. How could anybody with a heart get on here and take time out of their day just for the sake of making some negative and irrelevant comment? Nothing better to do I assume. Wether last nights actions were justified by either party does not change the fact that they have altered the lives of several families forever. My heart goes out to those families and I hope the idiots who had nothing better to do than throw salt in the wounds of those grieving the loss of those 2 young men burn in hell. Or better yet, fall victim to some senseless act of violence so we can then see what people will have to say to your family members and friends about how worthless your azz was. Still trying to figure out who gave any of you the right 2 judge, let alone be so disrepectful and heartless when all you really had 2 do was say nothing at all. But just as mentioned before, all of you are nothing but faceless cowards, hiding behind your IP Addresses!

Some of you all need to keep your opions to yourself. Good riddance. Shouldn't have been running from the police. These are GROWN men... NOT boys. They made a choice and for two of them, that choice was to die and commit a crime involving a gun.

No matter how ANY of you serial black male apologists attempt to twist this story, these MEN were WRONG. Hopefully the surving three will learn from this, be more circumspect about the company they keep, and change their lives for the better.

If you know these young men, or are related to them and you're supporting their reprehensible behavior, SHAME ON YOU!

Defending and excusing the bad behavior of young black men is killing them more than any police officer, white supremacist, racist, or any other external factor is.

I would suggest to all that were affected by the ignorant comments to ignore it. This is a time to reflect on the good memories you had with the ones that are no longer here. No one can judge a man based upon what was written in the article. So don't let the negative remarks make a bad impact on your life and how you see others. I didn't know any of them but its just a tragedy regardless. If time could be rewind; many would wish that they were never in that area, that shots were not fired or that they had pulled over the car. Whether one commits a violent act that results in death or one is murder that was innocent; we all shall meet our Creator. He has the final say. So let us live our lives the way God intended us until our time of redemption. Blessed are yea when man shall say all manner of evil against you falsely. (Matt 5) My condolences to the families and friends during their time of bereavement. And my prayers to all....

To all you ignorant people who posted on this article-

You're entitled to feel angry at criminals. Or feel happy when "thugs" are dealt with. But to take pleasure in the deaths of TEENAGERS- that's disgusting, regardless of their characters. And especially when those kids weren't gangsters or thugs. I went to high school with the two kids who died. I didn't know them all that well, but I had a laugh every time I saw them. I ended up in college, they didn't. A lot of it had to do with the choices we individually made. But I know that Hasante was getting his life on the right path, and here go some Dbags talking about how it "warms my heart that two worthless folks are out of the gene pool," or that they hope the other 3 people die or get shanked in prison. Really??? REALLY??? If that article had read "two serial rapists killed in car crash," then I'd feel you, but it wasn't. It was two teenagers, with friends and families, who now don't have a chance to live. What the hell is the point in having a criminal-free society when ignorant people like you are living in it?

These people were 19 and 20 years old, feeling from the police, many people are sophomores and juniors in college at that age.

They were fleeing from the police, putting innocent lives in danger, after firing a gun.

to kenk3...

DO YOU REALIZE HOW DUMB SO SOUND.?!!!!!
yes;the 2 men were 19 & 20.but last time i checked.19 & 20 doesnt make yu fully grown.it just makes you legal.the 2 were still very young and most likely still living with their parents.just like "sophmores & juniors" in college.

PS- if other news articles said it was an elephant blowing bullets out his butt killing little kids would you believe it.???? I THINK NOT.!
bnut just because they are 2 black young men who had a gun; they automatically stole a car.how does that even add up if they were just at the club.get your own facts straight before you say anybody isnt a good kid.YOU JAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE GO THROUGH && UNTIL YOU DONT YOU CANT JUDGE US.!!!!!

PS #2- count your blessings.and may GOD bless you.! =]

My heart aches when I started reading the comments. My daughter went to junior high school with one of the gentlemen and I was heart-broken when I heard about the incident. I talked with him on a number of occassions and he was a nice kid with a great personality. No one is perfect, white, black or whatever race you may be. I will admit, the circumstances that caused his death were not good and even if he didn't pull the trigger of the gun or loose his cool while driving, because of association, a person is just as guilty. It is devastating to have a young life cease prematurely and for a mother or father to bury their child when it should be the other way around. It is very important to constantly be proactive in your childrens(all races)lives. Life is a lesson to be learned and unfortunately he didn't live to learn that a split-second decision could change the course of ones life or end it. Unfortunately, young kids(all races) today don't have positive role models to help guide them in the right direction. For those who wished death on him, It would be nice if God could impale your hearts to want to help be a positive role model in a young kids life. To the family members who have lost a son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, or friend, my condolences to you and your family during your time of sorrow in hopes that my message could be of some encouragement. Know that eventhough their lives were cut short too soon, thier souls are at rest, no worries, no negative peer pressures and know worrying about how they are going to make it in this cruel, heartless and demonic world in which we live in.

first off i would like to say regardless of the situation lives were taken... period point blank.. and whoever was happy about their death should be the only one listed as a coward... they were young and people make mistakes... what occured wasnt the smartest or the best decision made.. but we shouldnt point the finger..my friends hasante and keith are never coming back.. and my friends randy and kyle have to live with the fact they watched their friends pass and that they are never coming back.. i feel as though you all that have posted negative thoughts should know the entire story from point A to point Z before you start to point fingers and name call... but regardless a life loss is nothing to praise over.... no matter what the situation is... IDIOTS.

David, your name says it all. Did you knkow these children in order to call them punks? Were you 18-20 years old at all in your life? You obviously live in a different world then the kids of today. They have a lot to deal with. Even the so called, nice, upper echelon, upper middle, and middle class kids. No one's child escapes what they have to deal with. There are a lot of people in pain behind this tragic, tragic accident involving children. We know who you are. Did you honestly think we wouldn't? You should be ashamed to have written publically these comments. Now you will have to look us, everyone of us in the eye. Cowardice is what you just practiced here. Yes, I say children because that's what they were. Young, full of life, with no cares to the world, except to think, they would live forever, and certainly not face death at 2/3 a.m. in the morning trying to outrun the police. As tragic as this is, for the loved ones they left behind and the mothers and father's of the two that perished, might that give these children left behind, their friends, pause to just take a moment and THINK. To all the young Black & White kids out there who are reading this. GUNS ARE NOT THE ANSWER! I just wish I could hold every one of you in my arms. GUNS ARE NOT THE ANWER! Regardless of who the gun belonged to. To even have one amongst you all in fun or violence is committing black genocide agains your own race. And this is what people like David Reiss wants to happen to you. THis is what they live for. This is NOT what Malcolm, or Martin, or Fannie Lou Hammer marched and died for. For the Black Mothers and Fathers that may see this article, speak to your children and pass that torch so that they may seek guidance and understanding and walk in the light. For the two young men who perished, may you walk in the light and love of the higher being. For God is love and is not hate. David Reiss will be judged by God one day. "Gaily I lived as ease and nature taught, And spent my little life without a thought, And am amazed that Death, that tyrant grim, Should think of me, who never thought of him.

And for the person who wrote regarding thee remedial classes in writing. What you need to realize is there is more than one way to write. Niki Givoani wrote that English was a hard language to express emotion through. What you are reading on this board is what is called a 'dialect' invented by black youth. And they can speak and write through more than one form of expression. Therefore YOU may want to take a remedial course in dilect writing. Open your eyes! Broaden your horizons. There is more than the Western European form of writing and speaking dialect.

To all the kids that knew the young men who died and the others that were in the car. Consider the below and may God be with each and every one of you.

"...People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive. It is as though they were traveling abroad..."

Italia,

What weed do you smoke? You can't possibly be rational and think that pontification about hugs and "stopping the violence" are going to solve the problem of Black male irresponsibility.

Invoking dead black people who actually believed in causes isn't doing it either. People with common decency and morals don't run around shooting people or fleeing from the police.

Now while there are legitmate causes for why black people, black men in particular, have chosen to massacre each other, we need to have some candid conversation about how saving the black male has had an adverse affect on black boys... who later become black men.

No amount of hugging, kumbaya singing, god talk, poetry, Civil Rights icon veneration is going to do that.

Personal responsibility is something that all of those people you mentioned in your first post believed in; the comments in this thread demonstrate that many black people sorely lack that trait.

The black community is dead; what exists now is a shell of a community denseley populated with people who stopped caring EONS ago.

I suppose that all are entitled to post their opinions about this news article but your comments would be better received if you were well informed. Knowledge is power. Clearly you know very little about this situation yet you choose to place titles on these young men and the young people of the District of Columbia. It's pointless to rebut your post however I want you know that these kids were not punk or thugs and they were not shooting from their car. If you had a son davidreiss you would be filled with the same sorrow as the family and friends of these young men.

First off let me say this is sad. To those Racist ass people, you need to shut the hell up seriously. Reading these comments have tears rolling down my face to see how cruel people in this world can be. I just came from the hospital today to see Darius and thank God he's fine. I did not get to see Randy but I heard he's holding up. Its not right to wish death upon anyone out here. What would you do to protect your life? The first thing that comes to mind right? So stop being judgemental against black people because we stand up for one another through all the drama. R.I.P Sante and Gil just know there are people who cares for you. Do not let these ignorant people get you upset or get you down because they dont have enough heart to say what they want to your face. The are just sick people getting riled up on cyberspace fights. It thrills them. They are the ones who need help. Black people are not the only problems in this world. People of all races are capable of doing the same thing. We dont complain when white people kill for crack do we? No we take a moment of silence and move on. Honestly I need everyone to stop being racist because its not right when are we going to stop disrespecting each other? When? It saddens me to read these rude obnoxious comments over and over but like previous people have said, what if it were you or one of your loved ones?...Yea it is their responsibility but at this moment its not..All we need them to do is to pull through and come home and to the lost ones we need to remember the good times not blame them for what happened. This drama needs to stop and Im not here to argue with anyone so I know some ignorant person is going to say sumthing because they always want the last word but you know what go ahead because I dont care about you or your dumb comments..God cherishes every life even if mistakes are made and if you wish death upon another person..you dont even cherish life yourself...I feel for everyone hurting because of this situation and Im here to support the ones who cares but for the haters or whatever you want to call yourself, you know you are wrong and all Im asking you to do is take a moment of silence for those we lost, miss, and love...even if you dont give a damn..Just please be considerate of others or at least for me because I would for you no matter who you are and what you did...Thank You

From Brianna Marshall, 11th, Woodrow Wilson SHS Much love to everyone and to those we lost...Im out 1

its soo funny & maddening when people judge without getting the full story. the news and or media doesnt always tell the entire truth. i hate when people say ignorant stuff. these teens were my friends. And it wasn't like them to start trouble or being harm to people if it wasn't for a good cause. Im pretty sure Keith & Hasante was afraid for their lives at the time this was unfolding. I wasn't there and I dont know the story. But I can only imagine this was not in the game plan for that night. They was suppose to go out hear some music dance parlay and come home. Now because of this incident I have to bury to friends & pray to God that the other two pull thru.

its never okay to says someone deserved to die. thats wrong. Sante had plans to go to college and make something out of his life and yes him and Gil made a mistake but everyone does it. You don't know them enough to judge them and say they were bad kids or bad anything for that matter. The world is never a better place when lives are taken, it just drops our population and it's crazy how people are dying for things that aren't worth dying for. and for me to know Sante and Gil it hurts to know that i'm still here and their not. Even though i wasn't that close it's still something i think about everyday. R.I.P Sante and Gil.....i know your in a better place but you guys are greatly missed =(

OMG!!!

I can't believe what I am reading on this site. First let me tell you. I heard the accident and it was the most terrifying thing I have ever heard. I just prayed that Whomever was in the vehicle was okay. I felt for these boys like they were my own. For all the heartless people who are saying people can't make mistakes, you are so wrong. No one know what happened or what caused the car to crash. It was late and all you are hearing is the cops version. No I am not saying it was okay to have a weapon, but these young men have greiving parents who are trying to deal with the lost of thier child. Let's all have respect for the family. My prayer goes out to the family and friends of the two young men who lost their lives. Rest in peace.

Mane it saddens my heart reading comments frm cruel and heartless people who didnt even know the five victims in the car crash ordeal...those five victims were Wilson graduates..the two that died were a major part of the Wilson family who touched many people..and were good kids..just because they were in a car.had a weapon..fleeing frm the cops..ppl want to say they were nuffen but idiots and that they deserved to die..WRONG..these ppl were panicking and making last minute choices..that apparently wasn't the right ones..and they didnt get a chance to learn frm them because they were taken away..and i leave you with this..if you didnt know neither of the victims personally then Y MUST you FEEL the need 2 JUDGE THEM?..Sante&Gil..you'll be missed dearly..and for your family..my heart goes out to you..and im praying for you through this tough and difficult time of grief..

For all of those who are posting negative comments saying this and that need to really educate yourself. To kenk3 I am a sophmore in college and I also work for the New York Times so I can tell you frist hand that REPORTERS LIE IT IS OUR JOB!!!!! If reporter told the truth you really wouldnt read it. And Further more I grew up with Keith Gilmore Starting at a very young age he was not a bad man. This is the same man who have stood by me through my ups and downs; good times and bad. Granted he made a mistake but who are you to judge and say he deserved to die. No one can make that call NO ONE. HE was 20 years old he had time to try and redeem himself for that very mistake. This is a tradgey but the real sad thing is the black community is dead and gone.I am actually scared for the generations to come. RIP Gilly I miss you brother

When and how did the world get so cruel? I am a DC police officer and it breaks my heart hearing about Hasaunte. He was a great kid who I personally spent alot of time with. Not only was he a great kid but he had a great mom who was really concerned about him and what he spent his time doing. I only pray to God that she doesn't see what some of you are posting about her only child. People do make mistakes. Instead of some of you being so judge mental use the same energy to try to make a difference. To the family, I am so sorry about your loss. Know that Hasaunte was loved by many.

First of all, all of u racists and condemners need to go to hell and think about your actions because you all don't even know the whole story behind what really happen. Second, how dare you applaud the death of TWO fallen soldiers in our nation. NO ONE deserves to die because of something stupid. Lastly, I knew one of the dudes, Sante. He was a good friend to me, one of my mans. I know he would NEVER do ANYTHING to hurt ANYBODY or put anyone else in danger. So, whoever congratulated him or Gill's death, I hope you burn in hell because that isn't right. R.I.P Gill and Sante because you will be missed unconditionally.

I must say that I have read this article almost everyday upon it being posted. There are really some ignorant, and cruel individuals in the world. However, do Not allow them to detour you. I grew up with both of these young men and I am saddened because a life ended prematurely. They both had a light within them that would have compelled them further. We lost a friend, a father, a future political activist. Just because an individual grows up in an environment does not mean that those factors define them.
To those of you who are affected by the negative comments that are being posted, remember that the devil came to steal, kill, and destroy. That is his job, to do just that! Those people are trying to break your spirit and steal your joy. They are not the point of focus. Hasante and Keith are. Both families are in my prayers. I send out my condolences. My heart longs for all who have died. I pray that there deaths stimulate a change. Do not let their deaths be in vein. They were too great men, full of purpose and their lives have been cut short.
I want to leave this with families and friends who are attempting to cope with this loss. The strongest part of the bone, is the part that has been BROKEN. Sometimes, God breaks us to teach us a lesson. Sometimes, we lose people we love and who were great because god wants to wake us up.
To the spectators who decided to leave rude, harsh and inconsiderate comments you are in my prayers. I pray that you never know the heartache that these families have experienced. Believe when the tables are turned, your perspective will be different.
