Md. to broadcast info on cop attackers

Maryland officials will broadcast information about people suspected of killing or seriously harming police officers through a new "Blue Alert" system that leaders hope will help officials locate suspects.

Gov. Martin O'Malley signed an executive order Friday establishing the new public alert program, which will send suspects' vehicle information to dozens of media outlets and display the notifications on the Internet and highway signs.

At the event, O'Malley recognized the families of slain officers, including the late Trooper 1st Class Wesley W. Brown, who was killed earlier this month.

State Police Superintendent Col. Terrence Sheridan said the alert system wouldn't have helped in that case because police did not have highly detailed information about the suspects immediately after the incident.
