Arrest in UMd. bar fight and stabbing

Washington Post editors

Police in Prince George's County have arrested a Kensington man in connection with the quadruple cutting that stemmed from a drunken altercation inside a College Park bar early Tuesday morning.

Leonardo Alonso Ramos, 21, is charged with attempted second degree murder and other related counts, police said. Maj. Robert Liberati, commander of the Prince George's County Police Department's District 1 station, said Ramos got into a fight with three University of Maryland students over a bar stool in The Thirsty Turtle, and after the fight continued outside, Ramos produced a folding knife and slashed all of them and his own brother, who had tried to intervene.

Ramos was arrested at his home early Wednesday morning, Liberati said. He said his image was caught on surveillance camera, and witnesses helped police locate him. According to police charging documents, Ramos's brother eventually identified him as the cutter.

Send him back to Montgomery County where they all live

Posted by: bschaper | October 13, 2010 1:21 PM | Report abuse

The perp lives at 10821 Madison St, (North) Kensington, 20895.

Like similar areas, this neighborhood (just north of the Conn. Ave. / Univ. Blvd. fork) has experienced obvious decline and its residents could definitely use more county support.

However, county leaders continue to neglect lower middle-class residents everywhere and enable housing situations that accelerate middle-class flight and suburban decay.

You won't find the Post covering that, though. Just the same old "if it bleeds, it leads" succession of police blotter detritus.

Yes! It's the County's fault! This stand up young man was brought to stab as a result of neglect!

Posted by: pgchustla | October 13, 2010 1:52 PM | Report abuse

What were the other "college students" doing who were involved with this? Are they innocent of any wrong doing? And over a bar stool? Seriously? A little better reporting would go a long way as we are going to report on a bar fight guys. What's next-a headline that reads "Tiffany is real p.o.'d about what was written on the bathroom wall-she's going to kick some a$$!"

pgchustla—

Try revisiting your reading comprehension skills.

I'm not defending this loser at all.

Just making the simple point that many of us in the mid-county are sick of dealing with these thugs in our midst.

Crime and decay are taking root in what used to be very livable middle-class neighborhoods.

I'm sick of living around low-life neighbors like Leonardo Alonso Ramos and his violent ilk.

It's not a story about the University Police Chief blaming the bar and trying to shut it down because the police cannot guarantee the safety of patrons.

This is about a very, very small group of criminals coming into a traditional college bar and victimizing the patrons and the permanent impact it will have on our young society. Cutting a guy's face with a knife is forever.

Why did Leonardo Alonso Ramos, 21, drive from his flophouse at 10821 Madison St, (North) Kensington, 20895, to a bar on Rt. 1 in College Park when he (1) wasn't a student, (2) wasn't working there, and (3) traveled with only his brother? TO GET LAID!

In thinking about it, I've come to the conclusion that yes, public bars in College Park should be closed, followed by college student-frequented bars throughout the country.

Criminals are attracted to these bars because they want to "hook up" with the young women - either legally or illegally. You're not going to get rid of the criminals, so get rid of the honest members of society.

The police can't protect us. Mitchell doesn't blame the criminals here, he blames the students who were attacked. It's a common defense - blame others when you can't do your job (or fellow police officers cannot protect and defend citizens from illegal criminals).

Give up. The bad guys win. Lock up your daughters. Pity the disfigured students.

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK NOBODY IN HERE TRAVELS? I have traveled and lived in foreign countries for over 15 years, and let me assure you every country I've ever visited required me to show my passport.

You cannot report a crime in Europe without proof of your identity and address. Your hotel still registers you with the police!

You are either extremely young and stupid or an outright liar. You need to learn before you make such embarassing claims that are off-topic.

Who wants to bet this guy is an illegal, and this is not his first run in with the law?
FedUpinMoCo, a great big AMEN on that. When,(and if) we ever get a county exec, and a police chief that has the cajones to step up and start dealing with all of the influx of these illegal Hispanics, like they are do some counties in Virginia, then just maybe the flooding here to MoCo, because it is considered a safe haven, they will go somewhere else.

Posted by: starrman60 | October 13, 2010 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, how does someone's immigration status matter in such a horrid crime? Are you trying to say WASPs doesn't commit crimes in America? Blacks? etc. That you try to infer his status based on said name is ridiculous. Just go live in the middle of nowhere where no one with a "funny" name can bother you.

Posted by: df540148 | October 13, 2010 6:14 PM | Report abuse

df540148, their immigration status is a precursor to the fact that they are ALREADY a criminal here in America. They bring with them their diseases, TB, Whooping Cough etc, not to mention their gangs and the mentality that they can do whatever they want. As FedUpinMoCo points out, that area along with Wheaton and Silver Spring, down near Blair High School and Takoma Park has become a breeding ground for them. NO, I am not saying that "WASPs" and "Blacks" do not commit crimes in America, BUT I am saying that to rid America of the illegal aliens would put one heck of a dent into crimes committed by the illegals. I do not want to have to live in the "middle of nowhere" as you suggest, I want to feel safe walking down a street in the aforementioned neighborhoods before the influx of the illegal scourge that has taken them over.

Posted by: starrman60 | October 13, 2010 6:47 PM | Report abuse

I agree completely with the comments of starrman60. While I am supportive of managed immigration, this influx of violence-prone immigrants has been excessive and is aggravated by the relaxed tolerance of illegals in our midst.
This part of Montgomery County is sadly no longer a safe or pleasant place to live.

I remember when I visited a childhood friend who moved away from Silver Spring in the late '60's to go to the University of MN. He lives in rural Wisconsin.

When he picked me up in Green Bay for the 2 hour drive to his small town, he went on about the illegal Hispanics who have trashed the small towns, put Americans out of work, and rapes now occur where none ever did.

It hit me then that this problem, far from being contained, is spreading like a virus. And this was 1992.

As long as politicians think they are future voters, I don't expect much. Sure, this individual should be cut from one side of his face to the other. But they'll just keep coming.

I realize how bad this sounds. Go talk to rape victims and kidnapping victims at the hands of Spanish-speaking criminals and tell me it isn't already a race war in this country.

I had to wash big items so went to a laundromat in N.Va to use a couple of machines. It was filled with Salvadorans, some of whom used plain threatening language as if I, a "gringo" had no right to take up their machines.

We let in 1 million legal immigrants a year. That's a lot. So let these illegals stand in line for the lottery. Why do these scum bags who came here illegally think they should have aby rights? Who let them in? Why are they still here?

Posted by: wjc1va | October 13, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Why are we talking about race. It could be a man of any background who commited the crime, it just so happened that it was a Hispanic male. People are talking about there ongoing occurences with people from a different race, which has no relevant issue to what went on at College Park. I've had my issues with different groups, but I know that all the people in certain ethnic backgrounds dont act the same, but eont see me talking about it..cause everyone is different. I thought you all would know that coming from one of the most diverse areas in the US.

To FedUpInMoCo: The address given for the arrested individual is SOUTH of Conn and Univ split in Kensington. The baddies can live anywhere. Kensington/North Kensington is still a great place to live, a largely undiscovered jewel with strong community roots in all parts.

I'm certainly not defending illegal aliens but this guy was probably a criminal regardless of his immigration status.
This is just the next step in his criminal career.
If he's here illegally, that's just another reason to jail him.
Here's what I know...when I read the crime reports in my local paper there are an inordinate percentage of the crimes being committed by people with hispanic sirnames. And the crime report used to be a lot smaller than it is now. I don't think that's a coincidence.

The legal or illegal question aside (and yes, I completely agree with the point that if he or his parents are illegal and HAD been deported promptly, this would not have happpened) The thing is that with some of these kids this kind of thing brings them HUGE street cred. I'm willing to bet that right now he's hanging with his buddies at Wheaton Mall or worse yet working with other little thugs of his ilk, bragging about this incident. I live in the same area and because MoCo has no discipline in the schools or anywhere else it's a nice cushy breeding ground for this behavior. They get the best of both worlds-the county panders to them for the sake of "diversity"(although the schools have a number manipulation program to label them anything other than hispanic-therefore it looks a bit more balanced( and they get street cred. i'm also willing to bet he and his brother have at least one child each living off the backs of the tax payers. And thus a never ending cycle.

TFMurphy:

You are completely wrong:

http://sdatcert3.resiusa.org/rp_rewrite/details.aspx?County=16&SearchType=STREET&AccountNumber=13%20%2001131755

See the linked map.

I am not a fan of permissive mass Third-world immigration policies, but the illegal-vs.-legal/other issue is often a red herring that diverts attention away from larger phenomena. Esp. the erosion of quality of life for the lower middle class & the upper working class (rising middle class).

N. Kensington, W. Wheaton, portions of G'burg/G'town, swaths of Silver Spring have been deteriorating rapidly, due to various economic and demographic pressures. Residents are left to fend for themselves amidst rising crime, escalating tensions (often along ethnic/cultural lines), neighborhood degradation, and more.

Culture wars (class, ethnic) are as old as America itself.

I'm betting that if little is done, by mid-century, many many more lower suburbs will end up almost as blighted and decayed as inner cities, due to chronic neglect and the flight of the middle classes.

And our leaders and community members will keep right on conveniently ignoring us if we continue screaming shrilly about the illegals next door instead of taking on the (related) bigger issues.

would only sound bad if it were not true, sadly my friend, you are dead on target.
wjc1va, the situation you described is more and more prevalent throughout Maryland too. You can not go into Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, the old Wheaton Plaza mall in Wheaton, or any number of areas in the metro area without having that exact type of occurrence foisted on you, whether you are white, black or of some other ethnicity, other than Hispanic. Yet the elected morons treat these illegals as 'future voters' or untouchables because they are afraid they will get the rath of La Raza, casa de Maryland or some of the many other endorsers of illegal Hispaincs. The instant anyone, especially one running for office, broaches the illegal subject, you get the bleeding heart liberal's whinning and bad mouthing them about their 'intolerance'. It is WAY past time to start taking America back for the legal, law abiding taxpaying citizens.
I have NO problem with anyone wanting to become a U. S. citizen, BUT THEY MUST DO IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE BEFORE THEM DID. And do not even get me started on how these criminals are draining the tax coffers of virtually every state, city, town, county and municipality in America.

The racism here is ridiculous. We don't even know the race of the "frat boys" yet everyone is assuming that 1) this guy is an illegal and 2) that he started the fight. Seems to me, he finished it! Anyway, we don't know all the facts and should not inject our biases to this case. As for bars in college towns-who would you expect to go to them, old men? Of course college students are there! Deal with it.

Warfare is a strong word. The deeper conflicts are cultural, class-based, and socioeconomic.

Again, the "illegal" label is often a distraction, a red herring.

Many allegedly "illegal" latino residents here in the D.C. area are actually legal residents (via TPS, etc.).

TPS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_protected_status

(TPS is actually something of a "trickle" or backdoor path to amnesty that doesn't get discussed very much.)

For various reasons American politicians, government leaders, business owners, labor organizers, religious leaders, issue advocates/activists and others have decided that latinos are the wave of the future, meeting physically-intensive labor requirements, boosting voter rolls, school enrollment, union membership, church membership, and more.

This rapid and aggressive demographic change has many downsides, but most of the Americans forcing these changes deny or discount those problems for their own reasons/agendas.

On a deeper level, this is a war on the working classes and the lower middle class, as "immigrants" are being used to displace/replace older and less "productive" Americans.

Why do white people come on every blog that is related to a person that is not white and start sounding like some ignorant country bumpkin who has never been outside of the trailer park? Grow up people, just like not every white person is a pedophile or plotting to kill their husband or wife for money, not every latino is illegal scum and not every black person is a gun toting thug. We need to start using the blogs for more than just expressing our racist stereotypes just because we suffer from low self esteem and need to make ourselves feel better about our loser lives. Get over yourselves people.

Posted by: ged0386 | October 14, 2010 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Why do white people always make any article that does not involved them about the race of the person instead of the crime. Its like whites are always trying to separate themselves from anything wrong by putting bringing attention to race. Then when a white person does the same crime they stay off the blogs as if that changes the fact that all races of people commit these crimes. No matter what percentage one race does over another all races have their share of criminals. No one is immune white people so please stop using race to try to convince yourselves that you are any better than the people you try to blame based on race. Just turn on Nancy Grace any night of the week and you will see your people, white people committing crimes ranging from murder to kidnapping to rape.

Posted by: ged0386 | October 14, 2010 3:46 PM | Report abuse

First it was black welfare queens who were the root of all of white peoples problems, now today its the latino aka illegal immigrant who they like to blame for their issues or they blame the government. White people, please take the advise you gave to black people for soo many years and get off your fat lazy butts, get a job, get your lives together stop blaming latinos blacks and government aka "the man" for why you are a loser and not happy with your life. I thought I would never see the day when the man blames the man and everyone around him but himself for all of americas problems. Crime has no race. No matter how much white people try to convince themselves otherwise.

Anybody with the least bit of web searching know-how can find these sorts of facts (and sometimes even more damning information) with just a few clicks.

Welcome to the post-privacy era. You endanger the community and end up with your name printed in the local paper, and anybody with broadband can check to see if you're their jerky new next-door neighbor.

Let the fool try and sue me; I could care less. First the WP would have to give up my profile information / server log access records to law enforcement, compromising my privacy, too. Not bleeding likely that they'd do that, unless I threatened to kill him or something.

Besides which, it would be pretty stupid for a vigilante to go after this guy (or any other violent thug).

He and his household members could be packing, have even meaner knives stashed away, be affiliated with gangs or other organized rackets, or worse.

P.S. I'm not white either, so your anti-whitey remarks are also off-target here.
