Man fatally shot in Pr. George's

By Washington Post Editors
Washington Post Editors

A man sitting inside a car in the parking lot of a busy Prince George's County shopping center was shot and killed Monday by a lone gunman who apparently walked up to the vehicle and opened fire, police said.

The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Penn Station Shopping Center in the 5700 block of Silver Hill Road in the District Heights area, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George's County police spokesman.

Johnson said police do not know why, but a lone gunman approached a car and fired several shots at the car, fatally wounding the man inside.

Police sources said the man was shot in the head.

The homicide was Prince George's 15th of the year. Johnson said investigators were hoping witnesses would come forward and call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.

"The number one thing right now that we want to get out there is it's a busy shopping center, it's normal business hours right now, anybody that saw anything just give us a call," he said.

This report has been updated.

Officers were initially dispatched to the scene for the report of gunshots, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George's County police spokesman, and one person was fatally wounded.

The death marks the county's 15th homicide of 2011.

Updates will be provided as they become available.

You know, with the easy availability of firearms, the cozy relationship between the NRA and PG officials, this sort of stuff was bound to happen.

What PG needs is,,,,,, GUN CONTROL!!!!!!!

If PG only had draconian gun control, the killers would not kill, the rapists would not rape, the muggers would not mug and skittles defecating unicorns would make a return.

Oh, if only PG had common sense gun control. But no. The PG republicans running the county and their blood drinking buddies in the NRA run things.

If only we had HOPE! If only we had CHANGE!

Bummer.

Well since there are no pictures published, I'll assume both the victim and suspect perp are from the community of the usual victims and perps. It's a shame; Civilization is so fragile.

Some companies offer discounts to motorists who drive a lower than average number of miles a year. Low mileage discounts can also apply to drivers who car pool to work. "Clearance Auto Insurance" is the place you should be if you need auto insurance at the best price

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Blame the politicians, blame the NRA, blame Sarah Palin. Yawn! Don't you little baby libs every get tired of the same old false litany and empty rhetoric that spews from your pieholes like venom every time a black thug kills somebody.

You're too terrified and ignorant to face the truth. You want the real reason; It's one word. The Democratic social experiment of re-locating a certain ethnic and racial element from the inner-city to the suburbs has failed miserably. Just keep pulling that "D" lever idiots.

To canda 14 - VirginiaConservative was being sarcastic. Democrats control Prince George's County and have for a very long time. Also, if people can't kill with guns they will kill using other methods. But guns do make it easier and less personal which is why I have mixed views about them.

Gun control?!?!?!?!? Why is this even a topic? It was a CRIMINAL committing a CRIMINAL act! As a CRIMINAL, he would have a gun regardless of any laws prohibiting it, hence the label CRIMINAL! The only difference is that unless he is mentally unstable, he would at least pause if regular, law-abiding citizens could legally carry weapons! As it stands now, it's nearly impossible for a MD resident to get a CCP so the CRIMINALS know that most victims are easy prey. Wonder how many MD politicians have a CCP, how easy was it for them to get one, but why they leave their constituents defenseless???

Gotta love em!!!

Gun control...Puh-leeeze. Gun violence. This is part of American life. If it's drug dealers & gang members killing each other, I can't cry for them. Sorry. Maybe I should. But I don't care. They don't do anything good or positive.

Hey virginiaconservative, how much GUN CONTROL was there in Arizona? As much as you might not want to admit it, there are crimes being committed where you live, too. Someone asked me why, with my views, I don't refer to myself as a conservative. I told them because for as long as I can remember everyone, be they Republican or Democrat, that called themselves conservative was totally against my right to vote, be paid equal wages, sit in a classroom next to them or reside in their neighborhood despite the fact my father and his brothers served in the military defending this country and were all honorably discharged. One Virginia citizen, upon seeing a classmate of mine walking hand in hand with his "conservative" girlfriend stopped us on the street and said, "that's just not God's way!" Before you try to make Prince George's County sound like a hell hole wracked with "urban" issues, you might want to stop looking past your own hypocritical "conservative" fires in the commonwealth of massive resistance.

These punks can get guns as easy as they can get drugs. They don't go to stores. People selling guns all over the place, day & night.

It's understandable when someone like the Congresswoman from Arizona gets shot that people would talk about "gun control" because it really is a red herring.

This is the USA. We ain't Japan.

If I'm determined to shoot someone, no one is going to stop me. How can they?

FYI...It's easier to buy a gun in Canada. Yet gun crime rates in Canada are far less than that of the USA. WHY??

"Guns don't kill people...people kill people."

The people, the people, the people!

Some how or some way I'm waiting for a poster to blame the PG County Police Department for yet another shooting...they'll be blamed for "not doing their job" but the same poster won't have any recommendations for how to prevent shootings.

The perp probably knew his victim. Things like this happen everywhere, of course you'll have bigots inventing racial theories out of it per routine for these stories. Gun Control is not going to solve the problem. If not guns, then people would resort to other weapons. Perhaps making guns more traceable would aid in catching murderers?

@polecatx1

Just what are Black Labs and Mole People? Is this your cowardly way of saying African American's? If so, you are a real punk, because you wouldn't say it to our face. Dont make up names, be a big boy or girl and say what you mean.

Posted by: nieci6719 | January 25, 2011 2:38 PM | Report abuse

BigDaddy651- I'll start. I live in this area. The police could start by enforcing laws and obeying those same laws themselves. The area is lawless. People are being brought up to believe that they can get away with anything in the area BECAUSE THEY DO GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING. The police set no examples and the county government cares nothing about the parts of the county within the beltway. Everything is reactive vs. proactive. We can call the police all day long to report crime in progress...which many of us do...but to inaction from the police. phfft!

@nieci6719. polecatx1 wouldn't say it to your face cuz he/she would get shot. that is how your type settle disputes

Posted by: slick3 | January 25, 2011 2:55 PM | Report abuse

CalmTruth,
Rather than attempt to task the police with preventing shootings and setting examples isn't that what parenting is supposed to do?
Who is "raising" the people doing the shooting? Teaching children to respect themselves and others, working hard to honestly earn a living, aspiring to a better life thrugh education and the opportunities it provides.

@slick3

This is the type of mentality I'm talking about, Hiding behind a computer to say what you are too scared to say in someone's face. If you cant say this crap to someone's face save it! I dont need a gun to handle your stupidity, only a spelling bee or some other intelligent venue to shut you down. Idiot!

I'll never understand why people get so riled up about people shooting each other who are all involved in "the life".

If..if, this latest victim was involved in "the life", too bad for him. I don't care.

Posted by: case50 | January 25, 2011 3:11 PM | Report abuse

BigDaddy651- I agree to a point. Most of us are parenting our kids plus standing in the gap for others who don't care to. Yet there are also those parents who need policing, yet the police continue to turn a blind eye. The children learn that mom and pop can get away with anything and the cycle continues. It starts out with small stuff like running lights and blowing through stop signs, until they feel so entitled, that if they don't get their way, they start taking lives. There are definitely two worlds. The gunshots are almost nightly...sound like they are right outside. We call the police to report, but I've yet to see them and the gunshots continue throughout the night off and on. I stand behind my statement that the PG Police are not doing their job. Just like parents are supposed to raise their kids, police are supposed to fight crime. It's not happening.

Is anyone who criticizes the black community or the behavior of black people a "racist"?

That word sure gets thrown around a lot.

Posted by: TaxiDriver | January 25, 2011 3:38 PM | Report abuse

@TaxiDriver

It's not the critcism that causes it to be recist. What is racist is the name calling and the blanket statements that are being made by one specific group of people. If I were to say that all Virginia residents are red necked republican racists, that would be wrong, the same way that it is wrong for people to come on here and make blanket statements about a group people; some of who work hard, pay taxes and have hopes and dreams for their children. If you are not going to be part of the solution, stop being a part of the problem.

I do believe that some people get off on coming on here and bashing people, particularly AA people. I'm tired of it and have chosen to let this be the last day of reading Washington Post online. My friends and I have already cancelled our paper subscriptions because the Post promotes this crap.

Sir - if you cannot back up your blanket statements, then please keep your comments to yourself.

It's government condoned terrorism. The law abiding citizens are basically held captive while those who call themselves "serving and protecting" stand by with their thumbs up their behinds. It really sucks when you no longer feel comfortable going to the local grocery store after the streetlights come on...if they are working.

Posted by: CalmTruth | January 25, 2011 3:49 PM | Report abuse

CalmTruth,
First, let me say that I hope you and your family stay safe.
I guess I have trouble understanding "parents" who don't actually raise their children.
When I worked and lived in PG I met a lot of very nice people and its unfortunate that the area has deteriorated to what you described.
But how can the police prevent shootings or drug dealing? People choose to do that stuff...aren't they the ones to blame?
What has to change to make shooting people(regardless of their lifestyle)a far less attractive option to the criminals?

Posted by: BigDaddy651 | January 25, 2011 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Big Daddy- The police can prevent the shootings and drug dealing by acting on the calls reporting the drug dealing and the reports of people flashing guns rather than ignoring them. A lot of guns would be removed from the wrong hands if they did so. I also believe to many people's dismay I'm sure that there should be a path to concealed carry law abiding citizens...but only for people who have been mentally evaluated and gone through some sort of training program to understand that it is only to be used as a last resort and to know how to use them. My neighbor's son, home on leave from Afghanistan and visiting his parents, was robbed at gunpoint of $3 at the corner store a few months ago. He gave it up, but it could have gone much differently.
