Grocery store death ruled a suicide, police say

Matt Zapotosky

Investigators believe the man found dead in a Bowie grocery store Tuesday shot himself, authorities said Thursday.

A medical examiner has preliminarily ruled that the 49-year-old man's death was a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Maj. Andrew Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department. He said investigators are still "wrapping up loose ends, but it seems pretty clear at this point both to our investigators and to the medical examiner that it was suicide."

The man’s body was found in the back of Villa Hermosa grocery store, at Ninth Street and Maple Avenue, early Tuesday morning with trauma to the head. Ellis said a gun was found underneath the body. Police will not identify the man because he is not a homicide victim, Ellis said.
