Red Bull gift gets U-Md. cops investigated
Two University of Maryland police officers are under investigation after accepting cases of Red Bull from a woman who they pulled over and warned for not wearing a seat belt, authorities said Friday.
The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Thursday on Preinkert Drive and was brought to the attention of police by the University of Maryland’s student run newspaper, The Diamondback, which captured photos of the incident.
Paul Dillon, a spokesman for the University of Maryland police, said those photos sparked an investigation, but at least preliminarily, it appears the officers had no “quid pro quo” arrangement with the woman.
Dillon said the officers pulled over the vehicle, a promotional tool for Red Bull, because they suspected the driver was not wearing a seat belt. When they got closer, he said, they saw the woman had the belt buckled and pulled behind her. They issued her a written warning, he said.
After that, he said, the woman asked the officers if they might want some Red Bull she had left over from her day’s work on campus, Dillon said. The officers accepted, he said.
“She said, ‘Hey, you guys want some Red Bulls to take back for the cops?’ And they did it,” Dillon said. “It was after the traffic stop was done. She said she was quitting for the night and had Red Bull to give away.”
Dillon said the department has policies governing what gifts officers can accept, and they are supposed to be reported, in writing, to the chief’s office. But he said, based on the woman’s account, at least, that officers in this case did not appear to coerce the woman or show favorable treatment toward her to get the Red Bull.
Still, he said, the incident is “not what we want.”
“Appearances are important,” he said. “We will deal with that.”
Dillon declined to identify the officers involved. He said the investigation is continuing, and police are working to interview a passenger in the woman’s car to corroborate her account.
