Police, gunman in PG standoff

Washington Post editors

Update, 11 p.m.:

Police have tasered the suspect and the standoff is over.

Update, 6 p.m.:

Police in Prince George's County have surrounded a robbery suspect who has holed himself up inside an empty school bus near Crossland High School in the Temple Hills area and is possibly armed, authorities said.

The incident began about 1:15 p.m., when a man forced a woman to withdraw money from either a bank in the 6900 block of Temple Hills Road, said Sgt. Michelle Reedy, a Prince George's County police spokeswoman. The woman went inside while the man stayed outside, and the woman told bank officials she was being robbed, police said. That's how police knew there was trouble.

After that, she said, the man apparently fled on foot to a bus lot nearby and got into an empty bus to take cover from officers, she said. He has no hostages, police said.

The woman was not injured.

Officers remain on the scene in a barricade situation, Reedy said. A gun was apparently recovered from the woman's car, but police said that was a BB gun. The woman told authorities that the man had two guns, so police are operating under the assumption the suspect is armed. More updates will be provided as they become available.

"police are operating under the assumption the suspect is armed"

Do the police ever NOT assume that the 'suspect' is armed?
