Md. squirting suspect remains held

The Montgomery County man charged in five semen-squirting cases holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, worked as an armed security guard at a government installation and was described by his mother as a quiet, well-mannered son who trains as a body builder.

Michael Wayne Edwards Jr., 28, also believes he will be vindicated, one of his lawyers said this week, speaking about the case for the first time. As of early Friday morning, Edwards was still being held on $50,000 bond in the county jail.

"He does have an explanation and an expectation that he is going to be found not guilty of these accusations," said the lawyer, David Martella.

But the police case against Edwards appeared to be getting stronger Thursday.

In arrest documents filed in court, detectives charged him in the three latest cases based largely on video recordings they say they found inside his cell phone. Those videos show Edwards spraying semen on the backs of three women inside a Giant grocery store on Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg in early July, according to the Gaithersburg Police Department.

Detectives earlier said Edwards squirted the fluid from a bottle similar to that used to hold hand sanitizer. He was charged previously with incidents at the same Giant, and at a Michael's crafts store in the Kentlands shopping center in Gaithersburg.

"He's been terrorizing women with this behavior," prosecutor Christina Favretto said Thursday during a bond hearing. "I think this is a community safety issue."

Edwards received an undergraduate degree in criminology and criminal justice in 2006 from the University of Maryland College Park, according to the registrar's office there. Prior to the five cases at issue, he had no criminal record, according to another one of his lawyers, Barry Helfand.

He worked for a private firm, Stronghold Security, guarding the front gate and making rounds at the Washington drinking water treatment plant on MacArthur Boulevard, which is part of the Washington Aqueduct, according to court records and Tom Jacobus, general manager of the facility.

"I have found all the guards, including Edwards, to be very personable and interested in performing their duties," Jacobus said Friday.

Edwards had cleared a background check before getting the posting, Jacobus said. After the allegations came to light, he was removed from his duties.

"We are on the front lines of worrying about the public's water," Jacobus said. "We pay a lot of attention to what goes on here."

Edwards's mother Diane spoke at the hearing Thursday, agreeing to take her son into her home if he is released. He was living alone in an apartment in Montgomery County at the time of his arrest, according to court records.

"He's never had any issues. He never had any problems," Diane Edwards said in an interview after the hearing. "He grew up in the church."

Diane Edwards said her son has had the same girlfriend for 10 years and she has stood with him during the ordeal. She stressed that her son has only been charged, and extensive media attention gives the impression he already has been convicted.

"It's very sad," she said. "He can't work."

The case against Edwards began on July 15, when police were called to the Giant. Using store surveillance video, among other clues, detectives charged Edwards with squirting semen onto a woman as he followed her out of the store.

When questioned on that charge, Edwards admitted involvement in previous cases, according to the police account in arrest affidavits.

The motive for the alleged actions remains unknown, according to police.

Barry Helfand is ONE of his lawyers? Barry is not cheap.

The pervert is a security guard who lives in his own apartment? He spent at least four years at the University of Maryland? And his source of income is....?

"He's never had any issues. He never had any problems," Diane Edwards said in an interview after the hearing. "He grew up in the church."

Same girfriend for the past 10 years.

Well guess what, Mom? Perhaps having him off the street and prevented from assaulting strange women with (God knows what) is preferable to his rent-a-cop job!

Being in a job where is works alone and is most often not supervised, I'm glad all he did was continuously masterbate and not rape.

1. Why is he smirking in his mugshot?

2. Why would a person go to college then work as a security guard?

3. DC water does taste like semen

Ewww. What was wrong with his penis?

Hmm, on second thought, don't answer that.

Oh...My...God. This is the most disgusting, creepiest story I've ever read. What is wrong with this world? I hope the semen he squirted is not infected with any communicable diseases. Those poor women. This pervert needs to go to jail where some huge man will probably force him to squirt semen. Wow.

Diane Edwards said her son has had the same girlfriend for 10 years and she has stood with him during the ordeal.

So what? Does that mean he's innocent because he has a girlfriend for 10 years. Seems like they have some strong evidence against him, especially since he's already admitted to his involvement in previous incidents.

"He's never had any issues. He never had any problems," Diane Edwards said in an interview after the hearing. "He grew up in the church."

So what lady? Just because he grew up in church he is immune to getting into trouble. News flash, anyone who goes to church is no different than anyone else, we all fall short of the glory of God. The lawyer should keep her from making anymore statements, she is making things worse!

Dag. Double dag.

Tell me this story is not going to go the route of international tabloids.

Nasty.

We have paid up to $500 a month for a squirt of semen, and this guy is giving it away for free?! He must really be insane.

Seriously, yuck and yuck.

Well, as long as she's standing by him and not in front of him, she should be fine.

I've read 3 or 4 articles in the Washington Post about this guy, and not a single one mentions exactly what crime he was charged with. It seems like an essential detail to this story and I find it egregious that it's been left out over and over.

Is there a specific crime for squirting someone with semen? Or was he charged with assault?

I agree there hasn't been any mention of it, so I went on the gazette and he is being charged with 5 counts of second degree assault. Thanks WaPo for your meticulous detail!

Not to be picky, but isn't the better question: 'why would ANYONE for ANY REASON go around squirting women w/ semen in aerosol form?'

Posted by: randysbailin | August 13, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

What's this country coming to when a man can't go around squirting semen on strange women?
