Woman fends off attacker with bottle
A Montgomery County man -- with stitches in his forehead -- was being held in the county's jail Friday morning after a woman fended off his rape attempt by hitting him with a bottle, officials said.
The attack occurred Wednesday evening, after which officers were called to the area of Spring Street and Second Avenue, on the northern edge of downtown Silver Spring, about 8 p.m.
Police say they learned the following:
A 26-year-old woman had been walking along Spring Street as it crosses over railroad tracks. A man approached from behind, pushed her down a hill towards the tracks and demanded money.
The woman had none. He told her he intended to sexually assault her. She struggled back. He hit her with a bottle. She grabbed the bottle, hit him with it, broke free, screamed and escaped. Back on the street, she flagged down a person who called police.
Officers issued a lookout for a man with a cut to his face. Two Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputies spotted the suspect in the 1700 block of Highland Drive, roughly a half mile north of where the attack and response occurred.
The suspect, identified as William Green, 24, of the 10200 block of Conover Drive, Silver Spring, was arrested.
"When we got him, he was in need of stitches," said Cpl. Dan Friz, a Montgomery police spokesman.
Green faces counts of attempted armed robbery, attempted first-degree rape and first-degree assault, police said.
Green's version of the events could not be immediately learned. Online records indicate he has not yet retained an attorney.
