Man killed in hit-and-run in Gaithersburg

A Hagerstown man was struck and killed on Firstfield Road in Gaithersburg on Tuesday by a driver who then left the scene, Montgomery County police say.

Edward M. Baer, 44, of the 11400 block of Collier Court was off-loading new vehicles from a car-carrier truck at a car dealership just before 10 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Firstfield Road. Police said in a news release that they have a description of the vehicle and are investigating.

Baer was taken to Shady Grove Hospital where he later died, police say.

Detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of the vehicle or its driver to call 301-840-2435.

I live in this area and speeding along Firstfield Rd and the surrounding roads is rampant. The police do NOTHING to enforce reckless, careless driving (often, they are the ones doing the reckless driving!). Drivers are literally out of control, speeding down residential (and main) streets, running red lights and stop signs, and otherwise doing things to endanger citizens. I certainly hope the local police (Gaithersburg and Montgomery County) start doing something to crack down on the speeding and craziness here. There are just more of these accidents waiting to happen.
