Attempted murder charges for 2 teens

By Dan Morse

A 17-year-old and 14-year-old were charged with attempted murder after police say they attacked a man in a Montgomery County parking lot, grabbed his cell phone, dragged him to a second-floor landing of an apartment building, beat him until he almost lost consciousness and tried to throw him over a balcony that was 20 feet above concrete.

A woman who came to the man's help was punched and kicked by the assailants before they then ran from the scene, officials said Wednesday.

Montgomery detectives were still looking for a third suspect.

The attack occurred about 3 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the 3300 block of Teagarden Circle, which is in the Briggs Chaney area about five miles north of the Capital Beltway.

Detectives charged Shante Dion Gladden, 17, as an adult. He remained locked up in the Montgomery jail, an official there said Thursday. Gladden is charged with attempted second-degree murder, robbery, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and theft under $1,000, according to police.

Detectives charged the second teen-ager, who lives in the District, as a juvenile, so his name was not released. He faces the same charges as Gladden. He was placed at the Alfred D. Noyes Children's Center in Rockville, police said.

Detectives said they are looking into whether the trio is responsible for other street robberies.

another argument for allowing concealed permits...now, only the criminals are armed.

Notice this happened in Maryland and not Virginia.

When will the voters of Maryland wake up?

I'm sure they are good boys at heart and were raised right. They might have just been profiled for some reason.

Briggs Chaney and Castle Blvd area is a scary place with lot of folks on welfare, probation and drugs living in apartments around. Need to watch out when passing by.

Slowly execute the 17 yr old, and make the 14 yr old watch it.

"Detectives said they are looking into whether the trio is responsible for other street robberies."

Last time I checked trio meant three, great editing Washington Post.

Totally agree with jsabol and trout1. Something is seriously wrong with our youth and we need to make examples of the barbaric. The more barbaric the crime, the more barbaric the punishment.

Read more carefully next time.

Come on now...it isn't these kids' fault. They don't go to good enough schools so they didn't know administering a savage beating then attempting to kill the guy by throwing him off a balcony was wrong.
We all know that no one is responsible for anything they actually do...

Sounds like something the Taliban would say.

Aren't you proud to be an American now?

just give both of them the death penalty, they are bums from MD. kill them now.

This is obviously a case of mistaken identity and racial profiling.

I just can't imagine a kid named Shante Deon
doing anything this horrible. Usually crimes like this are committed by people named Jonathan or Sven or Whitmore.

Shante is a victim.

The only thing sadder is the inevitability that the 14 year old will be sent to a juvenile facility, will eventually escape from there after beating a counselor to death, and will then drop off the grid for good until he tries to kill someone else. It's time to change the criteria for who gets charged as an "adult".

Leave those poor teenagers alone. A simple apology should be good enough, as long as they promise to not assault, rape, or kill in the future. They are misunderstood. There are not enough recreational centers or parks in MoCo. Maybe their single moms couldn't afford to buy them new iPhones so they were envious and had misplaced rage and aggression. If they are locked up, then the system just caused them to be another statistic of an incarcerated black man.

Makes me wonder what these castration folks would say if the accused were good ol' boys from some fine flyover state?

"If only they could black *and* illegal! AND on welfare! AND working a union job! And big-time donors to the Democratic Party."

Ah, well. Maybe Fox News will just say that anyway, just to make us angry white folks feel better.

I'll be proud when we stand up and deal with savages and subhumans, sending a message that barbaric behaviour is no longer tolerated.

They just missed the election, but they're future supporters of O'Malley when he runs for senator in a few years.

That DC juvernile is going to see what real jail time is like. Not what passes for 'youth rehabilitation' in the Distrit.

That whole Briggs Chaney/Castle Blvd area is a hellhole. I feel sorry for people who move in during the day and then find out that at night the animals come out to find prey.

Yeah, let's castrate the Catholic priests who molest children. Yet, you die hard fanatics seem to forgive them...Please, spare me...your racist rants are getting stale...

Why can't we revive the Roman circus. It would be amusing to watch people who kill just for fun get torn apart by a pack of starved hyenas.

Route 29 was a good place to drag race back in the 60's. When did all the crime get there?

when you do thing like that there no love in you execute the 17 and 14

Posted by: johnsonhermanj | November 4, 2010 10:42 PM | Report abuse

This is the perfect example of racist cops trying to railroad young black guys trying to make a case. Stealing an Iphone and a juvenille fight is hardly enough to charge these substantial crimes. The ploice are obiviouly trying to get the sypanthy of the public to try to make this stick. I live in that area and some of these kids deserve to be locked up but this is hardly one of the cases. make the boys pay restitution and apologize to the victims, but anyone (police included) who is not telling the truth or glorifying this charges to make them stick, should be charged as well.

The witness claimed to be attacked but she jumped in the fight and helped the victim and the when the boy she hit turned to strike her back, she screamed I'm called the police. It's all over the neighborhood. I had court the day of Shante's bond review, I peeked in. They kept him and are charging him as an adult but let a white kid go home that beat and attacked someome with a knife and fought the police, EXCUSE ME!!!! THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF RACIST MESS THAT MADE ME GO IN LAW. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THE RACIST COPS ARE TRYING TO SHORTEN THE BLACK COUNT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, THEY HAVE NEVER REALLY EXCEPTED US HERE IN THIS COUNTY, AND NOT THEY ARE TARGETING OUR YOUTH!!!!!

Posted by: LAWYERGIRL | November 6, 2010 12:10 PM | Report abuse

All of these comments about Castle Blvd make me shake my head. Do you all even live there? I do. And it's not a "hell hole" full of people on "probation, welfare" and all of that other nonsense. And the crimes that are committed there aren't even committed by residents of the area. All of them have been people from other cities loitering in the area. Case in point, the 14 year-old is from the District. I'm not saying the neighborhood is Green Acres (and I'm glad it's not) but let's not make it out to be something it isn't. But to call this a juvenile fight is rather an understatement, no? Attempting to throw a nearly-unconscious victim from a second-story balcony onto concrete should definitely be considered attempted murder.

Will the fathers of these black teens please stand up and be counted. They need guidence in their life and they dont get it. Black kids born to a single mum form 70% of births in the black community. It's about time the men were men.
