Rockville police officer charged with DUI

Rockville city police charged one of their officers, Cpl. Ali Zeighani, with driving a police car while drunk last month, city officials said Thursday. He was off duty at the time.

A nine-year veteran of the department, Zeighani has been relieved of police authority, and is currently assigned to administrative duties, officials said.

On July 5, at about 6:40 a.m., Zeighani was driving north on Interstate 270 near the West Gude Drive overpass in a marked police vehicle.

He reported that he fell asleep, struck a concrete barrier and pulled to the shoulder, officials said. No other vehicles were involved.

Other officers who arrived detected an odor of alcohol on Zeighani's breath. He was taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, and a blood alcohol test showed his level at 0.11, which is above the legal limit for driving, officials said.

He also was charged with traffic violations, officials said.
