Shooter may be Marine, FBI says

Washington Post Editors

While offering few specifics, authorities said Friday they believe the shooter who has fired on three government buildings in recent days -- and may have shot, for a second time, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps last night -- may be a U.S. Marine with a grievance against the Corps.

The shooter was urged to contact authorities during a Friday morning press conference at FBI offices downtown. Meanwhile, authorities were investigating shots that were were fired overnight at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Prince William County.

While not confirming that the latest shots were connected to the three previous ones, FBI authorities said they are investigating as though they were.

This is the second time the facility has been targeted this month. The building was closed when an unknown number of shots were fired at it, according to Prince William County Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Chinn. No one was injured.

Museum employees arrived Friday about 6 a.m. to find several new bullet holes in a glass window in the same area where previous holes were found, said museum spokeswoman Gwenn Adams.

Investigators were still on the scene Friday morning, according to Officer Jonathan Perok, a county police spokesman.

The new investigation comes a day after authorities, citing ballistics testing, announced that that the same gun was used to fire shots at the museum on Oct. 17, the Pentagon on Oct. 19 and a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly this week.

No one was injured in any of the confirmed shootings. At the moment, the new investigation at the museum is being handled by Prince William police, but FBI agents are en route to Triangle to pick up "some evidence of something that happened" overnight, FBI spokeswoman Katherine Schweit said Friday morning.

She said could not specify what the evidence is. The museum is closed for the day. Not even employees are being allowed in the parking lot.Adams said the plan is for the museum to open Saturday at 9 a.m.

Is this a 'dry run' by some homegrown terrorist ?? I see that the metro has been shut down a couple of times this week by 'suspicious packages' ... now is not the time to ignore such
incidents, b/c it 'interrupts' your schedule ... pay attention to details!!

Yep, spoken like a "TrueChristian". I guess you missed this part of the Gospel of Matthew:

“Judge not, lest ye not be judged.” (Matthew 7:1)

I certainly hope they catch this shooter before any innocent people are hurt. Thank you to the police, FBI, and everybody else who is working to protect us from people like this.

I think that a "Dry Run" scenario is out. They wouldn't be calling so much attention to themselves in a Dry Run if they were half way intelligent. I hope that they're caught soon. Pointing and firing weapons at public buildings is supremely irresponsible and malicious. Luckily for us our police are not stupid and are probably already breathing down this fool's neck.

Accusing a woman whose son died serving in the military of being a terrorist...You really are "A True Christian"

Hmmm all targets military in nature well I'm no detective but I'm thinking whomever it is has some ties to the military whether still active or has been discharged and or a family member of someone of this nature...also more than likely an ex-marine or someone who has issues with the Marine Corp since the museum has been targeted twice. But of course i'm sure or I hope they've figured out as much...

Please let's be diligent in finding out who is behind the shootings. I sense a pattern here. A distraction from the real purpose. Too many coincidences/disturbances around the Pentagon and other military installations.

Hmmmm.....attacks at a Marine Corps museum, the Pentagon, and a Marine recruiting station? Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I hope this person isn't planning something for the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday...

Sounds like another violent deranged leftist Dim like John Patrick Bedell the deranged California registered Democrat who shot at the Pentagon in March.

There were also shots fired at a Marine Corps recruiting station, another common target of crazed Dims.

You're telling me with all this high tech stuff D.C. police can't pinpoint where these shots are coming from?
Can't we call in the heavies like the FBI and maybe even some military assets?
The FBI has had an unmitigated run of victories lately, that's quite frankly impressive, I say: let's bring the heavies.

Police investigating ? How about letting the USMC investigate, and treat the shooter as an armed enemy combatatant ?

That would be way cool

Code Pink defaced a Marine Corps recruiting station in 2007 and a Berkeley, California recruiting station was vandalized in 2009. This is just the latest in a string of leftist attacks on our Marines.

Hello Steve,

Take your blinders off, the shootings didnot occur in Washington, DC.
MPD is responsible for investigating shootings that occur in the District of Columbia (feds when they occur at federal sites), if that's the DC police you are writing about. So, I think the fool knows better to risk getting caught by a traffic light or to be seen by a witness.

Muslim or Liberal....which will it be?

Shots fired and identified as having come from the same gun - remember the FBI crime lab was found to use techniques to identify and classify bullets that just couldn't be justified and consequently a lot of closed cases were opened back up. That aside - does a reader really feel that someone is going around repeatedly shooting at government buildings - Ill leave it up to the reader to reflect on that.

I'm betting on a disgruntled ex-marine,
I highly doubt it's a self-radicalized muslim terrorist.
Plus Virginia Game and Fish has a very strick limit on Low-E window panes this year.

Time to give the Marine snipers a chance to do some counter-sniper shooting. Better yet, have an AC-130 ready to fly/ blast anything with a heat signature.

I'm just saying...
Well where is the MPD?
Do they need help from the VSP?

spewfob the parrot must be outta crackers!

I am sure we will all know in time who this misanthropic knucklehead is. Hope we don't loose any one before that happens. In a free society, there is always the risk of someone coming unhinged. Watched the Daily show on line last night and the President spoke candidly and elloquently, with humor and gravity - nothing written on his hand, no teleprompters or ear buds feeding him lines. The man is the best president we have had in decades and time will prove it so. Meanwhile, after all the smirking smoke blows clear, the progressive agenda for America will continue to win over the politics of dopey nopey and 'you can't'.

eat hearty and get that dim bird some crackers, you know, voters. Pile em as high as you can, it isn't enough

Not only is the museum next to MCB Quantico, it sits next to the FBI. I'm thinking this is a pretty simple crime scene for them to figure out. Identify the bullets fired, from that the gun. Then, based on that and the angles, find the rough location where the weapon was discharged. The perpetrators either had to come up/down route 1 or I-95. which will have traffic cameras. The museum also likely has video surveillance.

It seems like the Marines, who have trained and employ thousands of snipers, could figure out where these shots are coming from in about 5 minutes.

Posted by: ADNova | October 29, 2010 11:57 AM | Report abuse

We have some great police forces plus the FBI in this area--they caught the Beltway sniper in 2002. If this shooter is lucky, they will catch him alive before the Marines get him in their sights.

Unbelievable! Still with the "conservative tea bagger" theory??? How does that make ANY sense???

What do you wanna bet it's some redneck white trash Dumfries a-hole doing a copycat? "Hey Bubba, watch this!"

The first three incidents? A liberal progressive from Alexandria, Sterling, or Fairfax, or a local Muj-wannabe.
