11th 2011 homicide in Pr. George's

By Matt Zapotosky

Prince George's County recorded its 11th killing in as many days Tuesday when a man was shot during an apparent residential robbery in the Hyattsville area, authorities said.

Officers were called to the 8800 block of 38th Avenue for a report of a residential robbery with shots fired, according to Lt. Tammy Sparkman, a police spokeswoman.

Sparkman did not immediately know any other details about the case.

The county's 10th homicide occurred Monday night when a man was stabbed during a fight in a supermarket parking lot in the 2400 block of East University Boulevard in the Adelphi/Lewisdale area, authorities said.

Police have stepped up efforts to curb the outbreak of deadly violence that has provoked concern and alarm in the suburban jurisdiction.

The Post has published a database of county homicides in 2010.

This item has been updated since it was first published.

This is disgusting....Totally disgusting! And the Post can't wait to print it..11th homicide in as many days! ugh....

pg is disgusting and dangerous, stay as far away as you can. UMD should be moved to a safer location.

Considering the suspect is still on the loose, it's the Post's responsibility to print this as soon as possible. With the proximity and possible connection to the University of Maryland, this homicide will no doubt get more attention than the others.

This is what happens when you are the wealthiest BLACK County in the United States.

You guys were walking around with your chest out like you really where wealthy, when if fact, the majority of the Blacks in PG County are living from paycheck to paycheck.

Look folks, stop trying to keep up with the Jones and living beyond your means. Instead, concentrate on your children, who are off the hook, not all of them, but most of them.

Teach them some work ethic, have your boys go out and shovel some snow for your senior neighbors instead of letting them lay around the house waiting for you to cook them a meal.

That's right you single mothers, let your boys turn into men. Let them be the man that their fathers weren't. Break the cycle. I could go on but I got to get back to work.

Interesting.

So on Dec 31st the headline could read, "365 homicides in as many days."

Stay tuned.....

Keep it classy PG. The Examiner reports that practically all of these shootings are drug related.

One article was a heart warming story involving baby daddy's, baby mama's, and baby mama's brother's beef with her baby daddy.

And all of the victims have been black... so far.

This is sad, but not at all surprising. For those of you offended by the run of the mill racists who choose these posts to vent, that should be the LEAST of your problems. Their ignorance ISN'T killing these black men; black apathy, dysfunction, and denial are doing it.

I have literally thrown up may hands and given up on saving black people who just don't want to be saved. I excised myself from predominantly black neighborhoods and communities eons ago.

If there were this many American casualties in Iraq or Afghanistan, the left Democrats would be in the streets protesting, marching. Where are they in PG County? Oh I guess they don't count.

Look, that community is an utter mess. Somebody, Jesse Jackson, Mayor Gray, Jehovah, somebody do something to change the culture. With bullets flying everywhere, it's just a matter of time before kids are gunned down...I mean real kids, not 14-21 years old males.

p.s. not that a shooting is good, of course. and it should be reported. just wanted to counter some generally ignorant and hateful comments.

Posted by: saracooper | January 11, 2011 2:56 PM | Report abuse

@BLKManCommonSense, While I understand your frustration, have you actually given up?

It is so sad to see our youths with black hearts. There's a book named "Losing the Race" that talks about blacks and self-hatred. When we look around in our communities and see the same thing over and over again, the violence, the self-hatred and self-sabotage that McWhorter wrote about seems alive and well...Heartbreaking!

You're correct about not buying into the bait by some posters, because our issue should be to save our youths...

Correction: All of the SHOOTING victims have been black. The Langley Park stabbing victim was hispanic.

What I do know is that NONE of the victims were white.

What do you care what people call you? Counter their argument with facts/statistics. Don't just call white people who criticize the black community or make comments about crime in PG County "racist."

The REAL racists are the KK & the Aryan Brotherhood. They want to kill ALL black people - women & children included. They hate Obama just because he's black. Even if he turns out to be the greatest President since Lincoln they will still hate him.

I'm talking about THUGS of all races, creeds & colors. Bullets from a white thug will kill me just like bullets from a black thug.

I've been reading comments on the Prince George's crime stories for the past week -- when will some of the onus of our community's ills also fall on the shoulders of men who aren't teaching their sons how to "turn into men?" How can one half of the race "break the cycle?" Essentially, we have an entire segment of adults who have, in essence, checked out, leaving others to fend for themselves and to raise boys without ever having the personal experience of manhood. It's a recipe for disaster, and what we're seeing now is destined to continue unless there is wide-scale change. Honestly, I don't foresee that occurring any time soon.

I am so disgusted with the Washington Post. How dare you publish some of these comments which are totally racist? Take for instance itsahotonetonite and TheChampishere; their comnments should have not been published. It's remarks and words like this that can start a civil war and a very viable reason for the shooting in Arizona. I will no longer read the Wash. Post and have your site removed from all of my databases. I am also going to start a petition, right in the streets of DC, to protest the Post and their staff for their racist attitudes. I have had enough and I'm sure there are plenty of people that feel the same way. POST, YOU ARE DISGUSTING!!!!!

The bottom line is its going to take everybody to solve this problem. A few things that need to change are:

1. We need black parents to start being parents again and stop trying to be your children friend.

2. Black people need to start protesting Black on Black crime with the same fervor as racist comments or white cops shooting unarmed black men. (which will always see Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton show up for their annual photo shoot)

3. We need to start taking discipline seriously in school and make these kids understand that there are consequences to bad behavior, and it needs to start early. You also have to separate out the worst violators, so they don't become a pied piper for those that are on the border between being good or going rotten.

4. From the White community we need for you all to stop flooding this country with so many guns. White folks you see the all the killings going on, but you just keep voting to allow more and more guns to flow. If you are not able to contribute to solving the problem then you are part of the problem itself. Also a little open mindedness about black people would go a long way as well. We are not all welfare recipients, rappers, and drug dealers, thank you.

I am so angry at Prince George's County how I would do absolutely anything to become an officer and passed beyond reason all requirements and I am billingual and still no call back yet but they will hire corrupt officers that only care for money? This is what is happening, lack of loyal officers lets the streets run free with criminals while honest people like me wait for a call to the initial interview?

Ok, wow, you folks REALLY show your ignorance when you post your racial and hatred comments and then you wonder why nothing changes.

Special_One40, yeah, you are very special -- Special Ed kind of special. No one is walking around with their chest stuck out; you strike me as one of those anglos that think only "your kind" is supposed to be successful, when you probably are not but who cares, you are definitely a coward because I guarantee you if I saw you on the street, you wouldn't DARE utter those same comments to a black person. If you haven't tried to be part of the solution to what is a problem with YOUTH today, regardless of their race, then shut your dayum mouth! Do you have this much to say when some white man kills his wife and innocent children before taking his own miserable life, I'm sure you don't.

For the rest of you biggots, again, if you are not part of the solution, shut up!

I have lived in PG for a long time and it doesn't matter what county you live in these days, the troubled youth or insane adults are every where. There are a lot of parents not raising their children to become responsible, working class adults, not just single-mothers or black people. Crime has no race, even if the majority of these crimes are being committed by black teens but if the article doesn't state that fact, then don't assume. We all thought the DC Sniper was white, what a shock that turned out to be.

To all the racists: The area of Prince George's located outside of the Beltway is just as black as the area inside, yet all but two of the murder markers are inside the Beltway. It looks like we have a socio-economic-based homicide problem, not a race-based homicide problem. As D.C> gentrifies, this squeeze-play will continue. The poor (and the criminal) will be hemmed in by Southern Avenue, Eastern Avenue, and the Capital Beltway. PGPD: Allocate resources appropriately.

Black/white/hispanic doesnt matter. Guns are the problem. Guns take a man who is a poosie and make him feel like a man. How much is too much? This is so stupid.

Out of these 11 killings many would not have happend if guns were off the street. How do we get them off the street. 30 year mandatory sentence. If you have a gun you have a gun there is no interpretation. Caught and you are guilty. Get the drug offenders out of jail and put the gun offenders in.

For all the people who claim they need guns to protect themselves...you are part of the problem. The guy in Arizona who tackled Laughner almost put a round in the wrong guy.....

We interrupt this story to bring you this important update on racism. According to the 2008 Census, Prince George’s County has a population of 825,924. Of that, 62.7% are black. Thus, roughly 517,854 blacks live in Prince George’s County. Last year, Prince George’s County had 91 homicides. This number is 70 less than DC, which has nearly 225,000 fewer residents.

Assuming that EVERY homicide in Prince George’s County was committed by someone black (which isn’t true), and that someone different committed each homicide (which isn’t true), THEN: only .0176 percent of all blacks were involved in homicides in Prince George’s County as assailants.

People who generalize from .0176 percent of a population to 100 percent of the population = RACIST PREJUDICED BIGOTS. We now resume our regularly scheduled programming.

The problem is black folks don't like to hear the truth. I am black and I live in PG County. Tougher laws are needed to get these animals off the road. The Washington Post needs to continue to report every homicide. These young black animals have no respect for life.

Posted by: bulldunn | January 11, 2011 4:36 PM | Report abuse

PS: Is there any statistical significance between the number of homicides committed thus far in PG County versus those committed in DC? Given the large numbers of people who live in both areas -- and the fact that PG has a much larger population -- I seriously doubt that the pattern has a statistical significance.

The fact that the murders have occurred one day at a time may look appealing to the human eye -- like skin color -- but from a scientific perspective, this probably has little, if any, meaning.

I have never said EVERY black person is responsible for the violent crime in the Wash DC area. I have always stated that it's a SEGMENT/PART of the black population - black boys/men between 15 & 30.

Is that not true? Am I making it up? Anyone care to dispute that?

Every person living in Prince George's County should call and cancel their subscription to the Washington Post. They don't print two stories about the county in a week but as soon as some homicides happen they start with the "violence" headlines. All of these killings have been drug dealers killing drug dealers. DC has the same type of crimes if not worse and they never run stories like this. How does a drug dealer being killed make an entire county of hundreds of thousands of people a violent place. Talk about biased. Cancel your subscription.

bulldunn -- you still are missing the issue. Lots of blacks live in Montgomery County. In fact, there are about 150,000 blacks in the county. Last year, there were only 17 homicides. This has a lot to do with class. If you did a statistical analysis of the location of these murders, this would prove the point. A lot of them are inside the beltway where poorer people live. You guys have no knowledge of statistics and are just arguing based on gut instincts. Become informed and then speak.

It's a "violent country"? Nooooooo. You don't say.

We can talk about white murderers if you want. I got no problem with that. I won't have a hissy fit or accuse anyone of being a "racist."

taxidriver: you're still a racist. you never responded to the stats i posted -- even though you demanded that people post stats. perhaps you are also disingenuous.

A PERSON was murdered. It would be nice if WaPo headline did not read "#11".

And as for these comments... none of you would dare make these stupid racist comments to anyone's face. WaPo should consider ditching these comments sections, they're really just places for all-out off-topic brawls

What does Arizona have to do with this? Pointing out a massacre committed by a white man does not make statistical truths go away. African-Americans are 13% of the US population and commit 52% of all murders. The WashPo not reporting on these murders will not make them go away.

11 killings in 11 days!
Must be all the conservative talk radio.

My feelings have been hurt. I'm going down to the WASH POST building to protest. Some words should not be used here. Sniff. Boo hoo. I'm not an adult. I'm a 9-month-old baby who knows how to type. My mommy said this would happen. WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

darrren12000,

I do agree that lower socio-economic blacks do the majority of the killing in the DC area, hence high rates in DC and PGC. However, one thing that you fail to mention is that when compared to equally impoverished predominantly white rural areas (WVA, Ohio, PA or southern VA) the proportions of violent crimes is much lower.
There are many law abiding blacks. There are many exeptional blacks but when socio-economics are factored out, blacks commit the most violent crime disproportionately in the US. It's sad and unfortunate. Invariably I will be called a racist.

Even Baltimore City hasn't had THIS many murders so far. When you have more murders than the home of The Wire, you have a serious problem. And it isn't racism to report it, it is news.

It is intersting reading the posts that everyone can point the finger of blame but no one can help resolve the situation and provide a solution that is intelligent and not biased. Therefore you are acting in the same position as the Wash Post just reporting or stating BS, and that is not a bachelor in science. The issue is that over the years we have lost our sense of values and decency for one reason or another. Part of the problem is that people have lost self respect for themselves, others and for life in general. On top of this society has allowed big corp to do whatever they want when it comes to the dollar (video games, technology, etc)w/o implementing the proper controls and directives to keep society safe. Our government has failed us and our society has failed us all based on greed which results in some sort of crime. We need to go back to basics and appreciate the fact that we have a life whatever it may be and appreciate what we have and not wish we had something else like a new video game, Ipod or someone else's Rolex watch. Until we do so society is doomed and I feel sorry for my future grand children and those of other. By the way I have lived in this area for 50+ years and PG county has always been an issue for SOME reason going back to the days of the Pagan motorcycle gang to the current environment and the issues it has. Unfortunately, that is why no matter what sport or what coach you bring into UMD will never be a program that can recruit the creme of the creme.

Ja00 -- your comparison of poor blacks in DC with poor rural whites is ridiculous. A more accurate comparison is with poor whites concentrated in urban poverty. This usually does not exist for various historical and contemporary reasons. The concentration of poverty in big cities has led to many underground industries that are associated with the type of violence reported here. Rather than discussing this reality, people like, whom I will assume are well intentioned, try to reduce it simply to race.

Here's another more accurate comparison: poor urban blacks with wealthy urban blacks. I live in a predominately upper-class black neighborhood in DC. It has had about 2 homicides in the last decade. Compare that with Congress Heights and other parts of the city. Before pontificating, get your facts straight.

Ja00: here's a link to a study on this issue. It shows that concentration of poverty raises the homicide rate equally for both blacks and whites. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1533-8525.2000.tb00091.x/abstract

darrren1200 - not to be a PIA but try and provide some positive aspect to this blog. Do you have a solution or positive recommendations to solve the issue. The problem with technology (this blog) is everyone wants to provide their interpertation of why the situation exists or who is to blame but no one has a rational, respectful solution. For everyone, find a solution and stop the blaming because if you don't then society continues down a downward spiral.

Below is the first section a document which reveals some of the awful truth about Prince Is Gorgeous County.

This is only part of a very complicated issue that is in no way meant to be easily understood.

Suffice it to say that, on this subject, the County has NEVER been up to any good … lest we not be in the present MURDEROUS SITUATION.

COUNTY COUNCIL OF PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MARYLAND
2006 Legislative Session
Resolution No.
CR-69-2006
Proposed by
Council Member Dernoga
Introduced by
Council Members Dernoga, Campos and Harrington
Co-Sponsors

Date of Introduction
July 18, 2006

RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION concerning
Public Safety Adequate Public Safety Facilities Test
For the purpose of temporarily suspending the staffing requirements of the Adequate Public Safety Facilities Test.
WHEREAS, in spite of efforts by the County Council to increase staff levels for fire and police personnel in the County, from the period April 2003 until April 2004, fire personnel increased by a negligible amount and police personnel decreased significantly; and
WHEREAS, in reaction to the inability to increase for fire and police personnel in the County, the County Council enacted CB-89-2004 to address and prevent inadequacies in staffing levels and response times for fire and police personnel in the County; and
WHEREAS, the staffing levels for police and fire and rescue personnel increased to 1365 and 685, respectively, as of August, 2005; and
WHEREAS, the staffing levels for police and fire and rescue personnel further increased to 1478 and 694, respectively, as of January, 2006; and
WHEREAS, the current staffing projections for August 2006 indicate staffing levels for police and fire and rescue personnel have again increased to 1510 and 732, respectively; and
WHEREAS, the strong pattern of growth in staffing levels for police and fire and rescue personnel addresses the concerns of adequate staffing of County public safety agencies; and
WHEREAS, the County Council’s efforts to control development until there has been an increase in the staffing levels of County public safety agencies has resulted in some development projects being deferred; and
WHEREAS, the success of the County Council’s efforts diminishes the need for controlling development, especially where it impedes important redevelopment projects that promote the General Plan of 2002; and
WHEREAS, Section 2 of CB-89-2004 prescribes that the Council shall review the provisions of the Adequate Public Safety Facilities test on or before July 31, 2006; and
WHEREAS, the repeal the provisions of Section 24-122.01 (e)(1)(A, B) of the County Code cannot be completed in a timely manner to meet the July 31, 2006, deadline prescribed in Section 2 of CB-89-2004; and
WHEREAS, Section 1017(c) of the Charter for Prince George’s County provides that a resolution adopted by the Council shall have the force and effect of law but of a temporary or administrative character;

Here is the rest of Prince Is Gorgeous County Resolution CR-69-2006 concerning the SUSPENSION OF STAFFING LEVELS FOR FIRE AND POLICE:

WHEREAS, upon due consideration of the monthly progression of County sworn police and fire and rescue staffing levels subsequent to the enactment of CB-89-2004, as well as the data concerning the current staffing levels for sworn police and fire and rescue personnel, it is the desire of the Council to temporarily suspend the staffing requirements in Section 24-122.01 (e)(1)(A, B) of the County Code.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Council of Prince George's County, Maryland, that the provisions of Section 24-122.01 (e)(1)(A, B) be and the same are hereby temporarily suspended.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any preliminary plan of subdivision that has been denied since January 1, 2006, based upon inadequate police and fire staffing levels, may be reconsidered by the Planning Board, if an appropriate and timely reconsideration request is or has been made. Accordingly, reconsideration shall be assessed in light of the staffing requirements specified herein.

polecatx1 - job well done in extrapualting the situation to what the cause may be but not solution to the solution. This is part of the problem with society that they are so eager to comment to the problem or fuel the fire of what the media is saying but no one can bring honest workable solutions to the blog. If you cannot be a positive contributor then don't contibute. Your time and response is not worth the entry. Do everyone a favor and think before you speak and make sure that what you say is worthy of helping society or don't speak.
