Leslie Johnson requests court delay

By Maria Glod

For the third time, Prince George's Council member Leslie Johnson (D-Mitchellville) has asked a judge to delay a scheduled preliminary hearing on federal evidence tampering charges, saying she needs more time to investigate the allegations.

"Although Ms. Johnson continues to diligently investigate the pending allegations, she still needs more time to conclude that investigation and prepare her defense," defense attorneys Shawn M. Wright and Hardy Vieux wrote in court papers filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt. Johnson requested a delay of the hearing, and "possible indictment."

Johnson and her husband, former Prince George's County Executive Jack B.Johnson (D), were arrested in November amid a sweeping corruption probe in the county. FBI agents said in court papers that an investigation revealed that developers and others in the county had been "regularly providing things of value" to public officials in return for favors.

On Nov. 12, as FBI agents knocked on the door of the Johnsons' Mitchellville home, the couple were overheard on a wiretap plotting to flush a $100,000 check from a developer down the toilet and hide $79,000 in Leslie Johnson's bra, according to court papers.

Leslie Johnson initially was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in December. At her request, it has been twice delayed. Prosecutors do not oppose pushing the hearing back until April, court papers show.

Leslie Johnson, who was elected to the County Council on Nov. 2, has retained her seat. The council in December took the unusual step of barring her from sitting on any committees, where dozens of key decisions are made. The council agreed she may attend committee meetings and vote on bills that come before the full nine-member body.

Jack Johnson was indicted Feb. 14 on bribery charges. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for an arraignment.

Leslie you are just postponing the inevitable.

Leslie Johnson is just kicking her own can down a ways more down the road hoping this is all just a bad dream.

The notion that she hasn't had sufficient time to research the laws on her court case raises the OTHER notion, that she hasn't enough time to perform her duties as a member of the county council and represent her constituents properly ... a lose-lose situation of which, hopefully, the court and the constituency has taken notice.

May the people who voted for her grow a new wart on their nose for each week of delay until justice is duly served.

This kind of delay endorsed by both sides often means a deal is being cut. She might very likely be negotiating a plea bargain under which she will testify against her husband.

Leslie Johnson should not be given any more delays. And no plea bargains should be offered to her. She is a former judge and a officer of the court. She knowingly has broken how many laws, how many times. Hold her to a higher standard and indict her, convict her and send her to jail for the maximum. Jack too.

I guess she needs more time to pad her...um, case.

Leslie, look down. Not that far down....two objects should appear....right, those. Remember when there was a bunch of money between them? Investigation complete.

Put Lady Bra Johnson in solitary and see if she still wants to have a 'delay'. Orange is 'in' this year for Leslie and Jack@ss Johnson!

Of course she is scared shirtless! Wouldn't you be? From being the big deal on campus to the prospect of long, long, long, lonely, lonely years in a dark, dank, prison separated forever from your family and your mantool, Jackster, knowing your sons have grown and aged, forever shamed by your insatiable need for glittery baubles, hated and reviled by all, would be daunting to everyone. Add to that the sure knowledge that on that long away day when she finally emerges from her
cell it is to the life of a feeble, broken, wretch, forever mired in the cruelest poverty and one has to wonder how she gets off the futon. Well, at least Lorraine Green in the District appears to be planning to keep her company which is more then their role model, Barbara Bullock, had!

Resign Leslie, resign! Then you'll have the time to prepare your defense for unethical behavior. The majority of voters in District 6 want you to resign as does the entire rest of the county. The fact that you don't understand this proves the prosecution's case--that you are ethically challenged.

She and her husband should simply show some dignity (perhaps for the first time), save the taxpayers money and a three-ring circus, and take a plea, do their time and be done with it.

"Leslie and Charlie Sheen are both in denial."

I don't recall Sheen stealing from the people he was elected to serve.

"Prosecutors don't object to the delay"

I smell a deal tnat allows her to plead to a lessor charge, avoid jail time and remain in office. Come guys (Prosecutors and Judge). No deals. Prince George's County has been irreparably injured by this whole sordid affair. Step away from the politics and celbrity, do you jobs, and get this prosecution done so justice can be served and our community can begin to heal.

Gay karate instructress, me Doc Cliford Thomas, (class at Bladensburg Rec Ctr in PGC) once got an award from Jack Johnson last year and I tell folk it is tainted.
Am I tainted because Iam a GAY karate dude or Jack and Leslie Johnson think like I do?
We cannot stand you ignorant voters and taxpayers but love to take you dignity, money and soul.

Poster TDiaz...had it right probably..the reason for the postponements is probably a plea deal in the wings...

As usual, the feds put the pressure on the litte fish to catch the big one...being Jack Johnson...they couldn't care less about her since she is not the one brokering deals with others as county executive...she might get just probation or some min imum time say 6 months at a minimum security camp...either way it beats doing hard jail time for more than ayear...For her sake I say do it...Johnson is too stubborn to just plead guilty, his ego won't allow it.....

Justice delayed is justice denied. Seriously, what defense do you have for being caught with $76K in your bra? Well, PG pols have no shame (see their sanctimonious reasons excusing their bigotry on the gay marriage bill they just killed) and the people who vote for them have no brains. In a democracy, you get the government you deserve and PG voters deserve these crooks. Enjoy.
