Plea hearing for NBA's Delonte West

Ruben Castaneda

Delonte West, the NBA player who was indicted last November by a Prince George's County grand jury on six weapons offenses, is scheduled to appear at a plea hearing in Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro Thursday morning, according to court records and officials.

Such a hearing often signals that a defendant is scheduled to plead guilty as part of a plea bargain. Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for State'e Attorney Glenn F. Ivey, said Wednesday that he could not comment on the matter because it is pending.

West, 26, is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound shooting guard with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers were eliminated from the playoffs this season by the Boston Celtics.
West is charged in connection with an incident last September in which he was arrested on the Capital Beltway with three loaded guns and an 8 1/2 inch bowie knife.

According to police charging documents, West was traveling north on the Beltway around 10 p.m. last Sept. 17 in a three-wheeled motorcycle when he allegedly cut off a county police officer near Route 214.

The officer pulled West over for making an unsafe lane change, and as the officer approached, West told him he had a handgun in his waistband.

The officer called for backup and searched West and his vehicle.

Three guns were found -- a 9mm Beretta in West's waistband, a Ruger .357 Magnum strapped to his leg, and a 12-gauge shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back, authorities said. West had additional shotgun shells in a backpack, authorities said.

In addition to the weapons offenses, West is also charged with one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving.

Did he ever say why he was carrying this arsenal? Stupid isn't a strong enough word, whatever the reason.
