No new trial for Keith Washington

Ruben Castaneda

Maryland's highest court has decided it will not consider an appeal by Keith A. Washington, the former Prince George's County police officer who was sentenced to 45 years in prison after he fatally shot one furniture deliveryman and seriously wounded another in his Accokeek home.

The decision by the Maryland Court of Appeals means the February decision by the state Court of Special Appeals upholding Washington's convictions will stand. The only recourse left for Washington would be to appeal at the federal level.

"The higher courts have affirmed what a jury decided in this case. A jury of his peers found Keith Washington guilty and this is hopefully the final chapter in this legal saga," said State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey.

Washington, 48, was a high-ranking county homeland security official when he fatally shot Brandon D. Clark, 22, and seriously wounded Robert White, now 39, while they were delivering bed rails to Washington's home in Accokeek in January 2007.
In 2008, a Prince George's County jury convicted Washington of involuntary manslaughter and other offenses.

"This does in fact give finality to the victims in this case, the State's Attorney's office, the witnesses and all the citizens of Prince George's County," said Assistant State's attorney Joseph Wright, who helped prosecute Washington.

During the trial, White testified that Washington became angry and began shooting. Washington testified that Clark and White -- both of whom were much bigger than he -- began beating him after they exchanged harsh words. Washington said he fired because he feared for his life.

Prosecutors presented evidence -- including photos of Washington taken the night of the shootings -- that Washington was not physically harmed.

And to think that he still thinks that he was justified in killing another human.

This man is the epitome of vanity with a side order of ego. All I know about the man is what he did to those deliverymen. His story was so unbelievable, you could tell he didn't spend any time on it. Then, a couple of weeks later, he pulls a gun on a man who went to his address by accident, knocked on the door and was greeted by a gun Washington was holding. Goodbye to bad news.
