Man guilty of killing over 'disrespect'

Ruben Castaneda

Juan De Paz Osorio went to the Hyattsville apartment of his ex-wife to protect the 4-year-old daughter they had in common. Someone inside the apartment had called Osorio and said he should pick up his little girl.

Osorio's ex-wife was being verbally and physically abused by her new boyfriend, Leonel "Coca" Rodriguez.

Osorio put the girl on his shoulders and walked out. According to testimony in Prince George's Circuit Court, he told Rodriguez that whatever happens between him and his girlfriend is not his business. But he warned him not to harm his daughter.

As Osorio walked through the parking lot of the apartment complex around midnight on June 15, 2009, Rodriguez grabbed a large butcher knife, hung from the balcony of the third-floor apartment, dropped down to the ground, ran to Osorio and stabbed him in the back. Gravely wounded, Osorio placed his daughter on the ground and told her to run before Rodriguez stabbed him again.

Osorio died of his wounds four days later.

On Wednesday, a Circuit Court jury in Upper Marlboro deliberated for just 20 minutes before convicting Rodriguez, 30, of first-degree murder.

In his closing argument, Assistant State's Attorney Jonathon Church said Rodriguez felt "emasculated" and "disrespected" when Osorio said he would beat him if he harmed his daughter.

Rodriguez is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 9.

Every time a Hispanic name is mentioned on this site, some inbred jed gotta start screaming about illegals.

A man died trying to protect his daughter, what a real man would do instead of being a lil bigot bytch hiding behind the keyboard.

First degree murder, without provocation, in front of a child. Why does that not result in the death penalty after conviction?

Instead, a man with little to lose will get three hots and a cot at taxpayer expense, effectively free to kill or wound inmates or guards with no real fear of ever being put to death for it in Maryland.

His reputation and impunity will make him an ongoing menace in the state prison system. All because Maryland would not pursue his just and timely demise. Convict and kill this gratuitous orphan-maker.

Don't want to be "emasculated" & "disrespected". OH NO. That's worse than being shot. Must be macho & tough at all times. That's more important than anything else.

I don't care where you're from so long as you're not in a gang, dealing drugs or committing crimes.

Hispanic people work hard & fast while everyone else is talking about doing work or taking breaks. See how long construction biz or janitorial/housekeeping biz lasts without Hispanics.

confounded, MD has suspended its death penalty and has only executed 5 people in the last 40 years. For all practical purposes it doesn't have the death penalty.

TaxiDriver, the illegals have the construction jobs because they're willing to work under the table, costing the shyster builders less per employee because they don't pay Workman's Comp or taxes on their illegal employee's *and* they can use abusive labor practices on them without worrying that they'll be reported to the authorities, NOT because the illegals are better workers (have you checked the "quality" of most of the newly constructed houses lately? "Slipshod" would be a nice way to put it...)

Again, if ICE did it's job......

Illegals?? How sad that a man died while protecting his baby and yet the only thing some small-minded people can focus on is his nationality! For the record, just because a person has a name that seems foreign to you, doesn't mean that they are. It also doesn't mean that if they are foreign, they are here illegally.

It is sad he died protecting an innocent life, as for the coward that attacked him from behind, he should pay maximum penalty.

Doesn't want to be "emasculated" and "disrespected"? Hell, he's beating on a woman. He's already emasculated and disrespected.

wily, slipdshod construction on new houses is not from the cheap labor employed to construct it. rather, it's from poor designs that developers have no issue building. these new designs utilize the minimum number of or cheapest materials allowable under code. for example, why build joists with 12 inch spacing when 18 or 24 inches is allowable under code? less wood equals cheaper to build. which also equal more shoddy construction. my little one story 1953 brick rambler in falls church has load bearing brick and block wall construction with 14 inch floor joist gaps. it will still be standing in 50 years when most McMansions are crumbling. and it's nothing to do with who built physically built the house. the developers of those days operated with smaller profit margins, so the quality of the house wuold be greater. it wasn't until the late 60's the average developer realized that the typical buyer doesn't know the difference between a well-constructed home and a poorly built home.

The murder of that baby girl's father is a profound tragedy. Greater still the death of decency in our community as seen in the racists screeds scrawled above and the irrevelant musings over construction codes.
