One suspect in two exposures, assault

Ruben Castaneda

Mongtomery County police said they are investigating the possibility that the same man exposed himself in two separate incidents, and may have been involved in an assault five years ago.

On July 3 around 6:40 p..m., county police went to the Gaithersburg Spring Hill Suites - Washingtonian Center in the 9700 block of Washingtonian Boulevard in Gathersburg for a report of an indecent exposure. A 25-year-old woman working a a lifeguard at the hotel pool said the suspect started asking her questions, then exposed himself and started masturbating.

The woman got away and called police.

Police are investigating whether this is the same man who assaulted a woman lifeguard at the Marriott Suites Hotel in the 6700 block of Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda on Oct. 16, 2005. The woman, then 21, saw the suspect enter and exit the pool area several times, police said. The woman asked if she could help him, and he shook his head no, police said.

The lifeguard left the pool area for a short time, and when she returned, the suspect grabbed her from behind and applied an electrical stun gun to her lower back. The attacker threw her to the ground and shocked her several more times. He ran away when the woman screamed. That occurred shortly before 4 p.m. that day, police said.

About 2 1/2 hours later, a 21-year-old woman and her 11-year-old sister were reading a book together inside the Borders book store in the White Flint Shopping Mall when a man sat across from them, exposed himself, and began masturbating, The older sister screamed, and the man ran away, police said.

Police said victims provided a similar description in each case. In 2005, he was described as a white male, 35 to 40 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds with a thin to medium build and short brown hair. He had a pale tattoo, possibly of a Chinese symbol, on his forearm at the time.

In the most recent incident, the suspect is described as a white male, 40 to 45 years old, between 6 feet 1 and 6 feet 3 in height, weighing 190 to 200 pounds with a full dark beard and mustache.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call police at 301-657-0122 or the police non-emergency number at 301-278-8000. Tips can also be called in anonymously to the county police at 240-773-8477.
