Update, 2:45 p.m.:

The lockdown has been lifted, after police said they didn't believe the suspect was inside. Police said the homicide victim is a 40 year old male employee who was slain in an area of the hospital that does not hold patients. Police would not identify the victim nor release any suspect information. They also would not say how the man was killed.

Update, 12:35 p.m.:

Suburban Hospital's public information officer Ronna Borenstein issued this statement:

"This morning at approximately 10:30 AM at Suburban Hospital employee was assaulted at the hospital. The hospital is on lockdown and there is a sizeable police presence there. Staff and patients are safe. The emergency room is closed, and visitors and patients should not go to Suburban Hospital until further notice."

Suburban Hospital in Bethesda is on lockdown as police investigate a suspicious death, a Montgomery County police official said.

Earlier, police responded to a report of a stabbing at Suburban, but the police official declined to say whether the stabbing and the suspicious death are part of the the same event.

The stabber probably just got his bill for hospital services.

Just another surgery gone bad, no doubt.

@ randysbailin- "The stabber probably just got his bill for hospital services."

The stabber probably couldn't read his/her bill.

So, the first murder of the new year in the greater Washington area occurs in Bethesda. Who would have guessed we'd beat PG county?

The victim was someone who went to work at a hospital on New Year's Day, while many of us were in sweatpants on the couch. A man is dead. He is not going home to his family. Imagine we could muster more respect for him than the passing of Ted Kennedy's 13 year old dog, Splash.

May this man's family be offered the respect and sympathy they are entitled to, and may those he leaves behind find comfort in good people - somewhere.(not here)

Have some concern that an employee died today, while many of us are home with our families.

The opinions above are disturbing that one would think a murder over a hospital bill is justified or this was due to a surgery gone bad.

We do not know the details but we do know a life is lost and our thoughts and prayers should be extended to this man's family.

I work at this hospital and I am very sad to know that one of our friends and family members was brutally murdered. This is a tragedy. While I do not know yet the name of this man, I do know that my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Another tragedy. According to Gazette.net, he was found dead in the boiler room.

He is a relative and it is believed the doer is a former employee. There are cameras everwhere so we hope to catch him soon. Be careful how you comment for the next one could be you or one of your loved ones. He just gave my sister a beautiful benz.

MSDOOBY1- I am so sorry for your loss! I have worked at the hospital for many years so I am sure I will know who this is once the report releases the info. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family! I hope they quickly find the killer and put him away forever.

@ Cornell1984:

Amen! There are far too many cold, and heartless people out here who post statements that mean and disrespectful. I pray that his family and other loved ones do indeed find comfort and renewed hope through good, decent, and kind people -- most of whom are not posting on this blog. God help us.

My apologies to any one that I offended by this remark. When I posted it, it hadn't been reported as a fatality. I look for humor in events and, in hindsight, I was out of line.

I agree with some posters that some responses were distasteful and disrespectful. But that is the norm here. Many people deaths are made fun of here. I dont have to mention what race receive the blunt of those distatseful comments and there NEVER seems to be any call for respect to those families!
