Honors for slain museum guard

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is marking the first anniversary since one of its security guards was gunned down by a white supremacist.

Thirty-nine-year-old Officer Stephen T. Johns of Temple Hills, Md., was shot and killed by James von Brunn last year. Von Brunn died in January before he could stand trial in Johns' slaying.

Museum officials planned a private memorial service on Thursday to commemorate Johns, who they say died heroically in the line of duty. Flags at the museum are flying at half staff in his memory.

The museum says it's launching a new summer youth leadership program named for Johns this month. About 50 Washington-area students will participate in the seven-week internship program.
