Va. teen gets 28 years in gang slaying

A Fairfax County youth who was 16 when he participated in the beating death of a rival street gang member last year was sentenced Friday to 28 years in prison.

Mario Reyes, now 17, acknowledged bringing a baseball bat to Woodlawn Park last March along with a fellow member of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, Francisco Gonzalez Sanchez, who was also 16. Gonzalez had been in the Fairfax juvenile jail for malicious wounding in November 2009, with a prior conviction for malicious wounding, when he was allowed to leave with his mother for a dentist's appointment, testimony in a court hearing showed.

Gonzalez did not return from the appointment.

Fairfax juvenile court officials acknowledged the error and said they put more safeguards in place to keep dangerous teen inmates from fleeing.

Prosecutors said that on March 19, Gonzalez and Reyes turned up at Woodlawn Park in the Mount Vernon area and that after Reyes began striking Christian Perez, 16, in the ribs, Gonzalez took the bat and began beating Perez in the head.

Perez, identified in court as a member of Surenos, another Hispanic street gang, died.

Gonzalez was later arrested in New York. Reyes was picked up in Woodbridge.

Reyes pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in November. He faced a maximum sentence of 40 years and received 28 years from Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Brett A. Kassabian. Last month, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. His sentencing is set for May 13.

I think it's pathetic that yet another youth who hasn't even experienced the benefits of a decent childhood, has been sucked up into the gang culture probably with the intention of bonding with his peers, because he lacked any degree of parental love and guidance in his own household.
Now he and those others involved, must surrender their lives to either an early grave, or exile to prison for the better parts of their lives, before their 21st birthdays.
What a tremendous human tragedy not just for those involved, but for the families and friends left behind.

Was his mother ever charged with a crime since she accepted responsibility for her little killer when he was released from jail?

Why has the mother not been charged with aiding and abetting????????????????

What I find incredulous is that Fairfax's school system is harder on students than it's court system is on criminals. Dental appointment is the reason a gang member was released to his mother? Somebody slept on this one.

Hey NyallsStJohnSmytheIV, how do you know these guys were Mexican? Not all hispanics are from Mexico. Without having any solid info, I would guess that the MS dude was from either El Salvador or Guatemala. Lumping all Hispanics into a Mexican category simply illuminates your lack of knowledge.

That is what bigots do - lump minorities together....you know - the ol' "They all look alike to me" syndrome......LOL, I bet that clown calls all Asians "Chinese"!!!

He probably equates someone who looks middle eastern as one of dem dare muslims also. Some people just don't get it, or don't have the mental capacity to learn. LMAO.
