Shooter may be Marine, FBI says

Authorities said Friday that they think the shooter who has fired on three government buildings in the Washington area in recent days -- and may have shot, for a second time, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps overnight -- might be a U.S. Marine with a grievance against the Corps.

The shooter was urged to contact authorities during a Friday news conference at FBI offices downtown. "We'd like to know what his grievance is and how we can try to resolve it," said John Perren, acting assistant director for the FBI's Washington field office. "We'd like to hear his side of the story."

Authorities were investigating shots that were fired overnight at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Prince William County. While not confirming that the latest shots were connected to the three previous ones, FBI officials said they are investigating as though they were.

The museum (File Photo/Post)

This is the second time the facility has been targeted this month. The building was closed when an unknown number of shots were fired at it, according to Sgt. Kim Chinn, a Prince William police spokeswoman. No one was injured.

Museum employees arrived Friday about 6 a.m. to find several new bullet holes in a glass window in the same area where previous holes were found, said museum spokeswoman Gwenn Adams. The shots were fired from the direction of Interstate 95, and authorities said it was possible the gunman fired from a vehicle.

"We understand he may feel a great deal of stress in his life at this moment," Perren said. "However, relieving his stress by shooting at buildings puts others at risk. Acting out this way can eventually lead to disastrous and tragic consequences that we all wish to avoid."

The new investigation comes a day after authorities, citing ballistics testing, announced that the same gun was used to fire shots at the museum Oct. 17, the Pentagon Oct. 19 and a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly this week.

Meanwhile, the area is preparing for Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon. During a Friday afternoon press conference, organizers said additional security measures were being installed along the route.

While not offering specifics, U.S. Marine Col. Dan Choike called the measures -- being developed in conjunction with the FBI and local authorities -- "robust" and said there would be no delays to the race schedule.

"Safe races have been conducted [in the past] and this year is going to be no different," Choike said. "We are going to run this race taking into account the incidents that have taken place... and additional measures are being put in place already at a low cost."

No one was injured in any of the confirmed shootings. At the moment, Prince William police are handling the new investigation at the museum, but FBI agents were headed to Triangle to pick up "some evidence of something that happened" overnight, FBI spokeswoman Katherine Schweit said Friday morning.

She said she could not specify what the evidence is. The museum is closed for the day, and Prince William police turned visitors away at the gate.

Wayne Hinaman of Cincinnati pulled up in a minivan with tourist brochures in the passenger's seat. Hinaman said he was in town for the Marine Corps marathon and decided to visit the museum. Undeterred by the news of the shootings, he said he was unconcerned about safety at Sunday's marathon.

"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much" space, Hinaman said, smiling.

Is this a 'dry run' by some homegrown terrorist ?? I see that the metro has been shut down a couple of times this week by 'suspicious packages' ... now is not the time to ignore such
incidents, b/c it 'interrupts' your schedule ... pay attention to details!!

I think that a "Dry Run" scenario is out. They wouldn't be calling so much attention to themselves in a Dry Run if they were half way intelligent. I hope that they're caught soon. Pointing and firing weapons at public buildings is supremely irresponsible and malicious. Luckily for us our police are not stupid and are probably already breathing down this fool's neck.

Hmmm all targets military in nature well I'm no detective but I'm thinking whomever it is has some ties to the military whether still active or has been discharged and or a family member of someone of this nature...also more than likely an ex-marine or someone who has issues with the Marine Corp since the museum has been targeted twice. But of course i'm sure or I hope they've figured out as much...

Please let's be diligent in finding out who is behind the shootings. I sense a pattern here. A distraction from the real purpose. Too many coincidences/disturbances around the Pentagon and other military installations.

Sounds like another violent deranged leftist Dim like John Patrick Bedell the deranged California registered Democrat who shot at the Pentagon in March.

There were also shots fired at a Marine Corps recruiting station, another common target of crazed Dims.

You're telling me with all this high tech stuff D.C. police can't pinpoint where these shots are coming from?
Can't we call in the heavies like the FBI and maybe even some military assets?
The FBI has had an unmitigated run of victories lately, that's quite frankly impressive, I say: let's bring the heavies.

Police investigating ? How about letting the USMC investigate, and treat the shooter as an armed enemy combatatant ?

That would be way cool

Hello Steve,

Take your blinders off, the shootings didnot occur in Washington, DC.
MPD is responsible for investigating shootings that occur in the District of Columbia (feds when they occur at federal sites), if that's the DC police you are writing about. So, I think the fool knows better to risk getting caught by a traffic light or to be seen by a witness.

Shots fired and identified as having come from the same gun - remember the FBI crime lab was found to use techniques to identify and classify bullets that just couldn't be justified and consequently a lot of closed cases were opened back up. That aside - does a reader really feel that someone is going around repeatedly shooting at government buildings - Ill leave it up to the reader to reflect on that.

Not only is the museum next to MCB Quantico, it sits next to the FBI. I'm thinking this is a pretty simple crime scene for them to figure out. Identify the bullets fired, from that the gun. Then, based on that and the angles, find the rough location where the weapon was discharged. The perpetrators either had to come up/down route 1 or I-95. which will have traffic cameras. The museum also likely has video surveillance.

There are enough lunies on the far left who are very capable of commiting this crazy act - I'm sure FBI with the capable leadership of our Attorney General Eric Holder will find the real culprit soon as long he's not one of those black panther gang members.

As a Marine wife and a Marine mom with a son in Afghanistan, after the comnments made by the FBI about these shootings, even agent Furnell would know that Marines wouldn't waste ammo by shooting buildings that do not have bad guys in them.

Another thing that seems to elude those Feds - Marines always have a "great deal of stress", and most take care of that in the gym, running, and in other constructive ways. Marines are trained to forget self and work as a team - this shooter is NOT a Marine.

He,or she, is probably a "wannabe" who either was rejected at the recruiting office (check the rejects list at the Centreville station, guys)or washed out in boot.

Just turn this investigation over the Quantico MPs and NCIS - leave the FBI out of it, for God's sake.

Hmm, steve_real ~ NO, you can't just look at where rounds fell after hitting bullet resistant windows and tell where they came from.

Looking at all of this objectively ~ and noting that the terrorist bombs on board these planes DID NOT originate at the VFW, or American Legion, or a Christian Church, or a Jewish Synogogue, or a Buddhist Temple, or a Hindu Temple ~ but instead in YEMEN where there's only one kind of "church" ~ this could be a foreign terrorist wannabee doing a round robin of SHOOT THE PENTAGON, SHOOT THE MARINE MUSEUM, SHOOT THE MARINE RECRUITER

Next on the list he's going to SHOOT A MARINE most likely ~

Must have something to do with recent deployments/redeployments and this terrorist is assigned the duty of sewing consternation behind the lines in America.

Why nonparticipants should be allowed to believe they have some sort of moral superiority is a good question.

No, Independents turn out to be the bad guys and once outside the realm of party politics they should be kept out of the polling station as well as only befits those who don't want to participate.

When John F. Kennedy was killed in 1963, some experts thought that Lee Harvey Oswald was actually more agnry at Governor John Connally, who was riding with Kennedy. Connally had been Secretary of the Navy when Oswald recieved a dishonorable discharge from the Marines after Oswald moved to the Soviet Union. It is possible that the shooter IS an ex-Maribe with some sort of grievance. He does not seem to want to hurt anybody, just make a statement of some kind, and may have mental problems.

Posted by: wolfnus | October 29, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

wolfnus ~ that's the "unaddressed grievance" theory.

That could lead a guy to shoot the Pentagon. But he shot the Museum. And, he shot a recruiting station, and not just any DOD recruiting station but a Marine recruiting station ~ (I think it's a joint USMC/Navy operation).

That's a pattern, not a grievance. You do this when you are drunk or intending harm. That he didn't hit anyone yet is a testimony to the strength of modern windows!

Buddy of mine once got drunk and started circling Michigan City Indiana. He went to the North side, then the West side, then the Southside and pulled fire alarms in the area.

The prison officials and half the cops in Northern Indiana were waiting for him when he got to the East Side where the prison was (BTW, may have the directions wrong, but my buddy got to spend some days in the city lock up over that one).

He commited a "pattern" offense. Remember the guy doing the gigantic smiley face by blowing up/shooting up mail boxes?

Again, a "pattern" offense.

To me it looks like a pattern, but not a grievance. A grievance would have stopped with a shot at the Pentagon or the White House.

I think the FBI will catch him once they realize he's likely NOT AMISH!

I was just saying to my friend today that it was probably a Marine with either some PTSD or just having some dangerous fun because he is mad and just kind of reliving some things on the battlefield in a sarcastic way.

With Tea Party Goons cuffing people who don't agree with them in Alaska, then stomping a woman a few days later, this could be an escalation of the "lock and load" mentality of the Tea Party.

We're seeing a Tim McVeigh moment again from the far right.

With all the Tea Party violence going on right now, I'm fully expecting Taliban-like voter intimidation from the Tea Party on election day. After all they have been talking about it for over a year.

This wouldn't be a US Marine. The ones I've encountered of late cowardly hide behind surveillance technology destroying human beings while engaging in sadistic torture abuse. That's the "Real Men" (and women) of the US Marine Corps these days not the Wimps who shoot at buildings. It's probably a US Marine surveillance target gone berserk who has a grudge.

Or, this is surveillance conditioning where the target is carrying out instructions from US Marines who are getting a big kick out of what they can get their human being targets to do Manchurian Candidate style.

Think out of the box.

The right to own an unlimited number of an unlimited number of types of weapons, which the Supreme Court has written into the Second Amendment for the benefit of gun manufacturers and dealers and for the benefit of organized crime, seems to include the right to commit a felony, including but not limited to murder, since one can't lose one's right to own weapons...unless one is convicted of a felony.

I knew it...I knew it... One of those wacko, stressed out PTSD-manic Chantix-induced marines, just back from Afghanistan... Simple Fi...

A marine? Unlikely, the guy has missed all his targets. Army ? now that is possible

Posted by: devluddite | October 29, 2010 6:29 PM | Report abuse

The guy could have shot someone already if he (or she?) wanted to. I think authorities might be on to something with their theory and concerns.

So, if he is reading this .. you haven't hurt anyone yet .. take the locals up on their offer and state your beef. I'm sure they'll do their best to assist.

Killing other Marines is their second favorite thing to do.

The fact we have SEERAL AlQaida sympathizers on this board tells me pretty much all I need to determine who did it.

These shootings are of a piece with today's bomb attempts.

More likely someone who didn't make the grade.

Time to give the Marine snipers a chance to do some counter-sniper shooting. Better yet, have an AC-130 ready to fly/ blast anything with a heat signature.

Can we find a little charity? The person doing the shooting is clearly disturbed, has some grievance against the Corps, but is being very careful not to cause injury or death. Isn't it likely he is a former Marine with PTSD? I think the authorities need to try to get him help. As the father of a Marine, I'll admit to being biased, but the tone of some comments makes me wonder if folks really understand that "support the troops" means supporting ALL the troops, not just the well-adjusted ones at the head of the parade.

the FBI and home lame security need to stop hiring these dubious anal-ists who bend over put their fists in up to their elbows, and pull stuff out of their arses like they were performing some kind of religous miracle and calling it intel analysis or criminal profiling or whatever they want to call it...

just because some NRA nutjob wants to invoke his second amendment "remedies" as sharon angle the GOP of nevada aptly names this sort of thing... they think he's a former USMC yahoo with a grudge...

maybe it's just some congressman from texas or wyoming... or kentucky wingnut just trying to keep his job at home lame security by stoking some homemade fear before the election...

a teabagger who forgot to register to vote?

The FBI were not able to find, the killer of Lt. Quarles Harris. The training facility does not have the best the FBI has to offer.

The best is probably found in Arizona where they are trying to destroy the Maricopa County Sheriff.
I believe this is not an attack more than it is a diversion from the mid term elections where liberals will again attempt scare tactics. It is pretty preposterous that a Marine would do this.
A Marine, knows no buildings destruction will hurt a Marine. What the Marines have is inside of them, not a stone and glass facade.
I hope the former Portland Oregon Police chief Charles Moose (twit), who was in charge of the Beltway sniper investigation, is not in charge of this one, or the people will be white automatically.
It was not the FBI who caught John Allen and Lee Boyd Malvo.
It was a truck driver.
This shooter doesn't want to hurt anyone he just wants attention to scare voters, from voting. The incumbants in the house and senate are needing a diversion.

This was my thought from the first- a marine, possibly with PTSD, having some issue... hope they find him before he kills someone and that he gets the help he deserves. Why are our veterans second class citizens after active deployment? I know I would lose it if I was in Iraq or Afghanistan... war is the last resort.

What proof is there that a Marine is responsible for the shootings? Without proof this article is simply conjecture and is to be suspected of hiding the possibility that there is another terrorist on the loose in the area.

Posted by: mlbduffy | October 30, 2010 9:17 AM | Report abuse

this guy could be a marine and a terrorist. What is a terrorist? What is a weapon of mass destruction? People should be careful and clear with their language.

If i had to bet, my money is on a disgruntled vet being behind this. Either way, it's clear that it will not end until he is caught or killed.

I think we have taken for granted the psychological toll that our poorly executed, decades long wars have taken on our soldiers AND contractors.

Well, at least Sadam Hussein is out of there and there is little chance of another like him taking over. LOL. what a joke...our "leaders" ...all of them...have led us astray, that much is clear.

Has anyone noted that a very similar scenario played out in the show NCIS about 2 weeks ago in a re-run? USMC recruiters and a recruiting office were being targeted by a disgruntled individual who had ties to the USMC.

"We'd like to hear his side of the story" Yeah, right! Maybe in jail. Good luck trying to coax the shooter to come out of the cold. Marines do not surrender! They either charge the hill or slip away and evade capture.
