Man convicted in Md. cabbie murder
A Prince George's County jury on Thursday convicted a Hyattsville man of murdering a cab driver and driving off in the victim's cab.
The jury convicted Christian Ellsworth Brooks, 27, of first-degree felony murder, use of a handgun in a crime of violence, armed carjacking and carjacking.
Brooks was convicted of the Oct. 15, 2008, murder of Tekola Bekele, 53.
"Mr. Bekele was brutally and senselessly murdered in the prime of his life," State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said. "I am pleased the jury found this defendant guilty of murder."
According to prosecutors, Bekele was driving his cab when he was flagged down by Brooks, who directed hiim to a quiet residential street in Landover near FedEx Field.
Once they reached the street, Brooks shot Bekele in the back of the head, pulled Bekele's body out of the cab, and drove away, prosecutors said.
The next day, Prince George's County police Officer Patrick Marron saw a cab matching the description of Bekele's vehicle and tried to stop the driver.
The driver -- Brooks -- led a high-speed chase which ended in Suitland, prosecutors said.
Brooks fled the car and brieflly broke into the home of a woman, who called 911. Officers quickly responded and found Brooks in a nearby wooded area.
Brooks is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 14. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison plus 80 years, prosecutors said.
