Suspect hurt on day Levy disappeared: Landlord
A woman who knew Ingmar Guandique testified Wednesday morning that Guandique showed up looking battered and saying he had been in a fight with his girlfriend on the day Chandra Levy disappeared.
Guandique, who is charged with killing Levy, is on trial in D.C. Superior Court. On the third day of testimony, Sheila Phillips took the stand to recall her relationship with her former tenant. Phililps managed the Northwest Washington apartment building where he lived in 2001.
Phillips came to know Guandique through family and work connections. She said Guandique's May 1, 2001, visit to her family's Georgia Avenue apartment was the second time he had turned up looking for a place to spend the night after a dispute with his girlfriend, Iris Portillo.
But unlike the first dispute, which had happened in April, this one had turned violent, Guandique told Phillips. His face was cut, his lip was swollen, and his neck was scratched, Phillips recalled.
"He told me he had a physical altercation with Iris," Phillips testified. "He just said they had gotten into a fight."
Asked by Phillips if he had hit Portillo, Guandique said assured her he had not and that the police would not be showing up on her doorstep looking for him, Phillips testified.
On cross-examination, Santha Sonenberg of the D.C. Public Defender Service questioned Phillips on the precision of her recollection of the events of 2001.
In her grand jury testimony, Phillips said she wasn't sure of the exact date of the visit by Guandique when he was battered. In later questioning Wednesday, she said it was "the first week of May" and was not as specific as she was in earlier testimony the same day, when she said it was May 1.
