Life in prison for daughter's killing

A Chesapeake man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his 5-year-old daughter.

Joshua Sawyer pleaded guilty in May to Carly Sawyer's June 2009 death. He was sentenced Monday, as first reported by WAVY-TV of Portsmouth.

Authorities say Carly Sawyer was confined in a box, tied up, hit with a belt and denied food. Paramedics summoned to the home found her with cuts, bruises and burns on her body and ligature marks on her wrists. She died the next day.

A medical examiner ruled the cause of death was blunt force trauma and said starvation and medical neglect also contributed.

The child's stepmother, Brandy Sawyer, also has been charged. She is due in court Dec. 10.
