Man attacks two Fauquier deputies in courthouse: Police

An alleged bank robber shot a Fauquier County Sheriff;s deputy in the leg and stabbed another in the face at the courthouse in Warrenton on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The stabbing victim is in stable condition at a local hospital, and the shooting victim was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Fauquier County Sheriff's Lt. James Hartman said he was still trying to ascertain the latter’s condition.

Alleged gunman George Golder Phillips, 30, of Warrenton, had been transported from the local jail to a holding cell at the Fauquier County Circuit Court for a routine court appearance, according to Hartman.

At about 1 p.m., in the courthouse's holding cell area, Phillips somehow stabbed one of two deputies in the face with an unknown object and then shot the second deputy, authorities said.

Phillips was promptly taken back into custody.

Police are still trying to figure out how Phillips apparently got hold of the two weapons.

In November, Phillips was charged in connection with three Fauquier County bank robberies, Hartman said.

The sheriff’s spokesman didn't release the names of the injured deputies.

It's just another episode of Keystone Cops. How many more times does this have to happen before ALL POLICE and SHERRIFF'S DEPTS. are required by law to carry no weapons. Every 6 months to a year we're treated to one of these stories. Friggin id10t's.

sheriff's have to be elected and because of that they have to be nice...
I suggest he not be so nice and restrain the perps so that they can barely walk...
for as long as they are not in the prison...

There's room at Gitmo for the perp. Too bad he was given a chance to surrender.

Another unfortunate side-effect of the macho American cop culture: they carry weapons as "badges of office", even when carrying a weapon is clearly counterproductive (i.e., when within arms reach of a prisoner, in a secure area).

The American police culture really is just a little too full of itself, more focused on flattering cops' ego and lining their pockets, rather than enforcing laws and ensuring public safety. Exhibit A: the ugly police habit of not ticketing any "brother cops" (or their card-carrying friends and relatives) out of so-called "professional courtesy".

Wrong. THE High Sheriff has to be elected. Not every sheriffs deputy.

My take...this incident did not happen the way the police say it did. Too many unanswered questions and too many details left out...just you wait.

Just for your info since you obviously have no idea or time to check. Fairfax Co. no guns are permitted inside the jails or the court houses. This applies around the country. I suppose you forgot about the incident in Ga. where the criminal over powered the female guard, took her weapon then killed several people before escaping. Guess what. They no longer carry guns in their jails or court houses. So it appears it is you that posts idiotic statements.

Why does the headline state that two deputies were shot? The story doesn't say that.
