Prisoners' legal guide for Va. inmates

By The Daily Progress

A legal guide to challenging prison mistreatment is being made available to Virginia prisoners.

A lawsuit settlement agreement in federal court in Charlottesville calls for five copies of the previously banned "Jailhouse Lawyer's Handbook" to be placed in each prison's library.

Inmates also will be able to buy subscriptions or receive gift subscriptions from the handbook's publisher -- the National Lawyers Guild and Center for Constitutional Rights.

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports that the agreement signed Friday settles the publishing company's lawsuit against the Department of Corrections.

A lawyer for the publisher said he was pleased with the settlement.

The attorney general's office declined to comment.
