Roanoke police chief to retire after 12 years in job
Roanoke Police Chief Joe Gaskins is retiring at the end of June. He's the first black to serve as the city's top law enforcement officer.
The 62-year-old Gaskins informed his staff of his decision Wednesday. He will retire June 30 after serving as police chief for 12 years.
City officials praised Gaskins for being innovative.
He introduced community policing and created the Roanoke Citizen Police Academy. He also established the Disciplinary Review Board to examine complaints against officers. The board includes civilian members.
