Settlement in Va. jail worker suit
The Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority has settled a $2 million lawsuit that claimed male employees were disciplined differently than female workers.
The Bristol Herald Courier reports that the settlement came late Wednesday on the eve of a jury trial in federal court. The settlement amount wasn't disclosed.
The lawsuit was filed by Vicky Horner of Russell County, a former guard at the jail system's Abingdon facility. Horner claimed she was fired in 2007 after she complained about lewd comments by male coworkers.
She also alleged that several female employees were fired for little or no reason, while male employees involved in worse incidents were allowed to retire, be promoted or transferred to other facilities.
