Tazewell deputy found dead after crash
A Tazewell County deputy was found dead after his cruiser hit a guardrail and went over an embankment.
Sheriff H.S. Caudill said 35-year-old Deputy Shawn Hess was responding to an emergency call in Richlands when the accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. 460. Sheriff’s Detective Anne Hickman says a passer-by reported the accident. The cruiser was found near the Clinch River.
Hess had served with the sheriff’s department for seven years.
Virginia State Police are investigating the accident. The cause hasn’t been determined.
