U-Va. lacrosse player George Huguely charged in Yeardley Love's death

A University of Virginia men's lacrosse player from Chevy Chase and the Landon School has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a women's lacrosse player at the school.

George Huguely, 22, is charged with killing Yeardley Love, also 22, of Cockeysville, Md., police said. Both are seniors.

Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo said officers responded to a call about 2:15 Monday morning for a possible alcohol overdose at Love's apartment, but once there, "the obvious physical trauma to her" led them to start a homicide investigation. He declined to say what the nature of the injuries were.

Love was found in bed by a roommate at their private apartment that Love shared with two female friends about three blocks from campus, Longo said. Huguely was found at his apartment, questioned and arrested by about 6 a.m., Longo said.

Longo said police have no other suspects in the case. Love and Huguely, he said, "have had a romantic relationship but the exact status of that at this time is part of our investigation."

At the Cockeysville home of Love's family, a woman who answered the phone Monday afternoon and identified herself as a designated spokesman said, "The family has no comment at this time."

When reached by phone, Huguely's grandfather, George Huguely III, said: "He was a wonderful child and he was going to graduate. Hopefully he will be graduating. That's all I can tell you, okay? I'm sorry."

Neither Robinson Bordley, the Landon School's lacrosse and football coach, nor Drew Johnson, the school's athletic director, were made available to comment. A Landon communications officer said no one at the school would have any comment on Huguely until the criminal investigation had run its course.

In a news statement, U-Va. President John Casteen said he and the Charlottesville campus felt anger at Love's death, particularly if she had been killed by a fellow student.

"This death moves us to deep anguish for the loss of a student of uncommon talent and promise, and we express the University's and our own sympathy for Yeardley's family, teammates and friends. That she appears now to have been murdered by another student compounds this sense of loss by suggesting that Yeardley died without comfort or consolation from those closest to her. We mourn her death and feel anger on reading that the investigators believe that another student caused it."

He went on to say, "and let us all acknowledge that, however little we may know now about Yeardley Love's death, we do know that she did not have or deserve to die -- that she deserved the bright future she earned growing up, studying here, and developing her talents as a lacrosse player. She deserves to be remembered for her human goodness, her capacity for future greatness, and for the terrible way in which her young life has ended."

The university was making grief counselors available, Casteen said.

no racist comments because WE all know that he will get off because he is the White jock that WILL graduate as scheduled...
murdering his girlfriend is no need for him to be kept after his arrest.....

oops .......did I just presume his guilt before his innocence was declared!!!!

So sad what a lovely young lady. My heart goes out to her family. And yes! I noticed the racist are quiet as well. No worries DC. 44% of all students have been in an abusive relationship by the time they graduate from college. The university is mourning this young woman's death; hopefully they will act proactively in the future to warn their students about the very real dangers of dating violence.

My thoughts & prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones of this young woman.

I get confused when I read postings like these. Tell me, if you are someone who loves one of these young people, what difference does any of this other blather make? A beautiful young woman is dead and a promising young man's life is forever changed whatever the outcome. There is plenty of pain and loss to go around and I am sad to see that the hounds of disagreeable discourse are on the loose to feed the fires of dissension, disagreement, and racial hatred.

May she rest in peace and may God help him.

what a senseless tragedy for everyone involved. I think it's a little too soon to make any assumptions about guilt at this point. However, it's interesting to note that they had been drinking.
Most murders are committed under the influence of alcohol.
If these two had just smoked a little weed(instead of drinking) they might of killed a bag of dorito's, but not the other person.

To those wondering why we're mentioning race, look at the comments on this story. We are discussing the irony of how sad everyone is about this girl being killed and not jumping to the conclusions that were jumped to in this story re: gun violence being a black crime.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/local-breaking-news/maryland/cops-neighbor-feud-led-to-md-s.html?hpid=newswell

And, here's my question: if she weren't aesthetically pleasing to the eye, would everyone proclaim how sad it is that a "lovely young woman" is gone or a "beautiful girl" is dead? I'm always so curious about comments like that... if she wasn't "culturally acceptably attractive", would you care as much?

Posted by: sigmagrrl | May 3, 2010 4:00 PM | Report abuse

So Landon is responsible? Has the school been charged yet? What about UVA? Does that institution share culpability? Who else can we blame? Is it all white people, just privilieged white people, just privileged people? LaCrosse players? Frat boys? What other moronic assumptions can you make and post? Go for it.

As for "beautiful young girl," I make no apologies, she is a beautiful young girl. Does that make her life more precious than another young woman who I might consider less physically attractive? No. Any young woman poised, as she was, at the beginning of a promising future, is a tragic loss to us all. Who knows what she might have accomplished, beauty not-withstanding?

So sad. I feel terrible for the victim's family. It's been less than 24 hours. We should wait for the facts to come out and to hear Mr. Huguely tell his side of the story. Perhaps there is more to this? Please remember that another former Landon grad was falsely accused in the Duke lacrosse case.

If the charges do indeed turn out to be true, I would think this is the end of Coach Starsia's tenure at UVA.

The reason why this will get play on the Today show is because it is an unusual occurrence. This typically does not happen to college students at places like UVA. If she was a minority lacrosse player at UVA this would get play on a national basis. As sad as it is a young African American girl losing her life is not that rare of occurrence. Especially when they are growing up in an area where violence is so prevalent. When the Baylor basketball player killed his teammate it got as much coverage as any story I can remember and they were both minorities. It was because it was a rare story in which the public would be interested. Do you think people want to hear about the latest gang related deaths from around the country? There would be no time to talk about anything else.

@ srobert1117: The stories were similar in that they were both young, college-age women who disappeared on Spring Break. That is why the two are of equal weight.

While the accused is nearly 4 years out of Landon, certainly questions do need to be asked about what kind of graduates are coming out of there. First the SAT scandal, then the Duke lacrosse scandal, now this. I hate to generalize, and I'm sure the model citizens coming out of there greatly outnumber the irresponsible, but the record makes the school look terrible.

Posted by: Section315 | May 3, 2010 5:05 PM | Report abuse

Danog. Your link further proves my point. It is more about the circumstances. They even show the difference in media coverage between two white girls the same age. One was from an affluent family and one was from a working class family. These stories make the news for a couple of reasons. 1. it is an unusual situation. Wealthy area where these things rarely if ever happen. 2. Holloway case where the family is affluent and can get the media to pay attention to the story. They get the media's attention to aid in finding their lost child.

People do not want to hear about all the deaths of young people in poor neighborhoods because it is so prevalent. There is a direct correlation between higher crime rates and affluence. Crime against young women is so prevalent in those areas that it is not newsworthy nationally. A prep school athlete killing another prep school athlete at one of the top universities is.

I don't understand blaming college coaches for the acts of individual players in their free time. Senseless.

Posted by: GeneWells | May 3, 2010 5:25 PM | Report abuse

I went to private school in the DC area in the '90's. In that circuit, you will always run into over-privileged, obnoxious kids getting into fights on weekends, etc. In short, there are bad seeds at most of these schools.

But hands down, no group collectively was worse than the Landon kids. They were notoriously awful. And it seemed that the worst of the worst played lacrosse (and many looked identical, wearing grungy cap pulled down below eyes, mullet-like hair flowing out back, lacrosse shorts hanging down below knees, drunk beyond belief, copenhagen in lower lip, driving massive SUV (typically a woody) with many lacrosse bumperstickers, etc.)

I am sure that the vast majority of kids there are just fine, and maybe the kids engaged in the outrageous behavior we saw and heard about were just a handful of kids, but this is the memory that has stuck with me about Landon.

Posted by: DCNative44 | May 3, 2010 5:36 PM | Report abuse

"People do not want to hear about all the deaths of young people in poor neighborhoods because it is so prevalent."

I wholly disagree...it's because the MEDIA chooses who to cover. And you're not getting the point we're trying to make.

In the other story, the commentariat (ie us) were railing on and on about how they weren't surprised at the shooting because it was black on black crime. While as, in this story, everyone is reacting with more empathy and shock.

We should NOT be shocked when a white kid shoots someone. NOT in today's world, people. And we shouldn't be so dismissive of the violence in another case just because of race...

Posted by: dcmom | May 3, 2010 5:44 PM | Report abuse

danog2242--
I can't see why this sad event should have anything to do with Coach Starsia's tenure at UVA. There's no suggestion here that, even if the facts are as the police believe, the lacrosse team or program had anything whatsoever to do with it, no suggestion that Coach Starsia had any reason to believe this young man might be capable of such an act nor that the coach should bear any responsibility for the player's alleged actions.

Posted by: MCFinArl | May 3, 2010 5:57 PM | Report abuse

@ Tslats - Out of all the comments, there was one comment at the end where someone referred to race (ironically 2 minutes after your post here - it may have just been you trying to make your "case"). The majority of the comments were either homophopic or complaining about all the crime in the area.

If you look for racism in everything it will always be easy to find. We live in a country full of "victims", losers cling to their victim status to justify their failures in life.

Posted by: dchilo1013 | May 3, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

@Section315: Why do questions need to be asked about the type of students who graduate from Landon? Please explain how those questions would have anything to do with this tragic news out of UVA?

As a proud graduate of Landon, I'd be happy to tell you that my classmates were a talented and honorable group of young adults who have gone on to accomplished careers in many different fields.

I'm amazed at the ease at which people who know absolutely nothing about Landon can make sweeping generalizations about the school or claim that their anecdotal stories (@DCNative44) provide any insight into this tragic loss or any other news involving Landon and its students.

Posted by: few2779 | May 3, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

MCFinAri-

I actually agree with you. I was just trying to point out that Coach Starsia will end up taking the fall for this, just like Coach Pressler did at Duke. Particularly if alcohol or drugs were involved in any way. And this, if the charges are true, is worse than what happened at Duke.

On a separate note, I think people should lay off the Landon bashing. Like a couple of the other posters, I too attended private school in the DC area in the 90's (not Landon) and played lacrosse. I knew plenty of great people who attended Landon. Every school, public or private, has some bad apples.

Posted by: danog224 | May 3, 2010 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Why is there's always race baiting on most articles in the Washington Post? I agree, many whites always point out the unlawful behavior of blacks and Central Americans. It's hard for many whites liberal and conservative to realize, whites too can or display unlawful behavior too. It's call a human behavior and free will.

Tom34 - what in the world are you basing that off of? All of the kids involved in the SAT scandal were either kicked out of school or suspended for an extended period of time. By no means did any of them suffer "no consequences". I would like to point out, however, that Georgetown Prep had a similar SAT cheating scandal within 5 years of the Landon one, yet nobody made a big deal about it and none of their students were expelled.

First off there is no race issue here. Second, it is a shame that one 22 year old is accused of killing another 22 year old. End of story.

If you are going to bring up race, it is "reverse racism" when posters say "spoiled" or rich kid or anything else. It is tantamount to calling a young black person Ghetto and blaming his actions on that. Because, we all know, when you say "spoiled" you mean those damn white people who grew up with more than I did. You are just as guilty of bigotry as those people who label kids ghetto, or "gangsta."
I hate to say it, but between this article and the Georgetown drunk students blog article, those people who love to bash young white kids come out of the woodwork. As a young white man who has friends from all backgrounds, religions, and countries, and who went to a Prep School, all this veiled racism from the WaPo peanut gallery is sickening. Most young people who you want to bash have a bit more understadning, compassion and willingness not to judge based on race.
If you are going to claim racism, maybe its time you stopped being a racist yourself!

If we can, for a few minutes at least, let's just acknowledge that two young lives have been ruined and two families irreparably harmed. Black, yellow, brown, white or red, these are real people like us who now have an unbearable sorrow. And, yes, it's true when it happens to any young person, regardless of their race or status in life. The only generalization we can make now is that this is very, very sad.

As to we should not be surprised when white people shoot white people. When it becomes as prevalent as black on black in poor neighborhoods people will stop being surprised. It is certainly not there yet.

We lived down the street from Landon and the kids there had a well deserved reputation for being drunken louts who traveled in packs abusing any young women unfortunate to to come into contact with them. And the Lacrosse players were the worst; they thought their athletic prowess entitled them to do whatever they wanted without regards for others. Let's see 1) SAT scandal 2) Duke rapists (excuse me, they got away with hiring poor black women to do degrading things for their amusement) 3) UVa murderer. What's next?

Just one more horrific story about a man who believes he is entitled to murder a woman because she won't do what he wants her to do.
Will this "belief" ever come to an end? Not in our lifetimes.

I have a major problem at the linking of this tragedy to the Duke scandal. One of the three accused from Duke was a Landon graduate, and they were proven innocent and wrongly accused. Landon is a fine school and produces great people. Just because one of them acts out of line does not mean the school's name should be dragged through the mud.

Landon school. Chevy Chase. Rich white boy. Parents with oodles of money. Yeah, he'll go to jail, right. Those Duke lacrosse players were in the same league. You saw what their rich Bethesda parents got them out of, didn't you?

I'm a female who attended a DC private school with a very liberal reputation and we always found the Landon guys to be great guys. Of course, at Landon as at almost any school, especially in an all male environment, there were jerks, but the majority of Landon men were and are wonderful men with a very strong sense of values, loyalty and community. Landon is by absolutely no means an all white community and many leading members of the community, including this year's school President, are from minority background. Among my friends from Landon were many Muslims, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, etc. This is a terrible tragedy and if you are so lacking substance, care and compassion that you make this a selfish racial issue when it is not one then I can only prey for you and your community because you will be stuck in darkness until you raise your mind out of the gutter and learn to have some respect.

For the sake of justice, thank God this happened in Virginia -- and not Maryland or the District. There's a reason why the crime rates are so low in Northern Virginia.

You get charged there and the courts will have you for lunch.

And guess what, how many spoiled liberal brats of elitist liberals go to Landon? How many Landon parents and Alumni (and Chevy Chase rich libs) voted for Hussein NobeLOL? More than 90% gauranteed. Rich trial lawyer scum of the earth live in Chevy Chase....most of them liberal; most of them with Obama stickers on their cars.
I really don't care about this what so ever...just wish the media were truly journalistic and reported the truth.

Prominent people, rich people, poor people, dumb people, smart people, all have the capacity to perform stupid hateful criminal acts. What's race got to do with that? They all come up with some STEREOTYPICAL reason why they did it based on their personal situation. Reasons like Drugs, booze, women, bad parents, too much money, to little money, religion, girlfriend,Ozzy Osbourn, neeeded money, all become real stories. These stories are shared through idiots like most here to continue and foster the stupid Sterotypes that define our culture.

How about condolences to the family of the young girl who died and the kid, if proven guilty, hopefully who will end up dying not too shortly thereafter.

DUKE LACROSSE RAPE ACCUSER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER
Duke Rape Accuser: 'I'm Going to Stab You [Expletive]!'
By CLEOPATRA ANDREADIS and CHRIS FRANCESCANI
Feb. 18, 2010

The woman who was at the center of the phony Duke lacrosse rape case was arrested today and charged with attempted murder.

9-year-old calls 911 as Crystal Mangum and her boyfriend fight.
The Durham Police Department told ABC News that Crystal Gale Mangum got into an argument with her boyfriend, Milton Walker, shortly after midnight on Thursday.

The arrest warrant claims that Mangum, 33, scratched, punched and threw objects at Walker before taking all of his clothes and setting them on fire in a bath tub. Firefighters were sent to the home to extinguish the blaze.

Listen to the 911 call HERE.

Police said they had to evacuate three children, ages 10, 9 and 3, from the apartment because of the fire. It was not immediately known whose children they were.

Mangum is charged with first-degree attempted murder for communicating a threat because she allegedly told Walker in front of officers, "I'm going to stab you [expletive]!"

She was also charged with five counts of arson, simple assault, identity theft, damage to property and resist, delay and obstruction of justice. In addition, she faces three counts of child endangerment.

Mangum is being held without bond and her first court appearance is scheduled for today.

Mangum triggered a furor in 2006 when she accused three Duke Lacrosse players of raping her while working at an off campus party. Prosecutor Mike Nifong heightened the seriousness of the charges by declaring the alleged assault a hate crime.

The charges against the three, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, were eventually dropped, but not before it roiled race relations in the university town and the players were suspended from school.

Another member of the team said in an email response to ABC News "All I can really say is that, like everyone, she has the right to due process and is innocent until proven guilty."

Nifong pursued the prosecution vigorously despite the growing evidence that Mangum had lied about being sexually assaulted and despite the fact that Magnum changed key facts in her version of what happened.

What on earth does the Duke case have to do with this one? At Duke, 4 demonstratively innocent men were falsely accused of rape.

In this case, a man is accused of murdering a woman with whom he had some sort of romantic relationship.

What's the same there, other than the fact that they played lacrosse? Maybe they all had cereal for breakfast, or read comic books. It's irrelevant.

I'll tell you why race is important here: First, I haven't read any of the bloggers here use the word monster, animal, degenerate or any other disparate term to describe the suspect--like they would a person of color. Two, there are bloggers who have actually called for people to withhold judgement about the suspect until he's proven innocent--a person of color would never be given the benefit of a doubt. Three, this guy will definitely get off--white men always do!

An ambiguous, and pointless, statement by the U. Va. president:

"We mourn her death and feel anger on reading that the investigators believe that another student caused it."

At whom is his anger directed, the "investigators" or the "student?" And why would he express anger at either one when it's far to early to draw conclusions about what happened? Is Mr. Casteen a grown-up?

Anytime a murder is committed on a college campus it is news. If it is one of the top academic institutions in the world, as UVA is, then it is obviously front page news. Add to the fact that these were both top athletes who had been dating. Thats news.

Absolutely nothing to do with race at all here, you racist haters. The horrible drug and crime problem among whites in poor rural areas such as parts of West Virginia is often as bad as it is in most urban crime centers and it gets even less national coverage than all of the disgusting constant criminal activity in many urban minority neighborhoods.

Your hate will eat you alive. The point is to build peace without regard to race, but some people, you haters, want to preserve racism, hatred and violence because you don't love yourselves.

@hawgsrule Wrong. If both the suspect and victim in this case were black (with the same background and educational credentials), the level of news coverage and tone of the blogs would be totally different! I love it when white folks try to minimize the fact that one of their own can be just as evil and low-down as what they sterotype all people of color to be.

Was OJ given the benefit of the doubt? The idea that whites have advantages in the justice system is pure racism. The ability to hire a top lawyer is what gives one an advantage and there are plenty of minorities who can and do hire top lawyers in their defense.

The loved ones will invariably stumble upon your moronic rambling and feel even worse than they already do. Do the world a favor, go to the thousands of other stories out there. "Why is there's always race baiting on most articles in the Washington Post?"-Because WAPO seems to attract a large number of white racist, who never miss an opportunity , when there is tragedy in the black or Hispanic community, to post the most mean-spirited and hateful comments no matter how hurtful or despicable..."You, and others posting similar comments, are not getting the point. They are not saying that this senseless act is racially motivated. They are trying to point out that when a story involves Blacks killing or being killed, they are always a team of racist that flood the comments section with ugly stereotypes, racist views, and plain hatred. This is not seen on the majority of post about white killers or whites killed."

Case in point the report of murder in Brandywine and the vicious posts with that story were over the top. Up till recently blacks tended not to take the opportunity to slam all whites for the crimes of one demented white man or woman.

Tragedy id tragedy, and its pains my heart to think of a young life lost and the agony of this young womans family. I still would hope we live in world were all of us can pray for this family and deeply regret their loss.

Part of the problem here is WAPO and its monitors not taking down the most vicious racist comments directed at blacks and people of color. Maybe if more whites spoke up about this, tragedies like this one wouldn't veer off in to into such dismaying dialogues.

I'm African American and i feel for my people and I do mean all the American people. Our culture must evolve to the point were murder is unthinkable. Its not TV entertainment, its never justifiable.

I personally know Yeardley, and she actually was an amazing beautiful young woman...the comment so many have focused on. It was not that she was physically appealing, but that she was a genuinely beautiful person, inside and out. Yeardley was nice and welcoming to anyone she met, and I am thankful I even knew her.

The focus is on Yeardley because she was an amazing human being, not because she is white. I cannot believe that race is even an issue here. A young girl has been murdered, yet because it was reported, multiple other events have been called into question. Question them else where, not where her legacy is currently being left in heartless comments. Let her friends and family morn without the bitterness of America descending upon them. Do not make this into a racist thing when Yeardley welcomed everyone, no matter what race, in open arms.

Just one thing that comes to mind in all this...Martha Moxley...the murder of a 15 year old girl by a golf club to the head from the blow of a Kennedy cousin, provoked by jealousy and rocked the Connecticut town of Greenwich in the 70's. Let's just hope loopholes, influence, and money do not delay justice to take 25 years to prevail in this case. If this boy mad the massive mistake of taking this young women's life,my rage o accident, may god at least grant him the strength to do right by her now and come forward with honest and heartfelt regret and begin to allow her family to move forward. And perhaps for the sake, and not for his even find it in their hearts to forgive. A tremendous act of heroism on their part, but the only true thing that will ever give them closer. I pray for the strength of both families, and they each my find the strength to be there for the family that remains in the wake of these great losses.

A drunk driver kills people when he or she is behind the wheel , this should be no diffrent . It all comes down to this clown being a "Momas boy" , getting what he wants and now that he couldn't he took matters into his own hands and killed his former Girlfriend . Truth be known I heard on the news he had been charged and arrested years back for being drunk and disorderly and had to be tazered. Not attacking the parents in this but the kid probably cried for everything and they gave it to him with no penalty or consequences for his actions . Treat him as amurderer in the 1st degree he knew what he was doing . Just a power hungry , possesive "kid" who always got what he wanted except for this time .

When charges of murder by a Landon student (who was a lacrose player at Landon) is a follow-up to charges of Landon students (who were also lacrose players) being charged with rape, and those same students were charged 2 or 3 years earlier with beating up a gay couple in DC, anyone reviewing the criminal history of sports team members of a particular prep school (or even a college), would naturally ask the question - why? There has not been and there is not any current similar situation of a particular school with a particular team having members charged with crimes relating to rape and murder of a woman and assault on a gay couple. Landon stands alone! Seriously, this is the only time in history of sports or prep schools or both that this has happened. So what can we make from this? What can we ask? Why did this happen? What kind of culture created these crimes? Was this something among team members solely? Was there something else going on? Why? No prep school and/or lacrosse team has ever experienced this. We as a culture of sports lovers need to seriously ask why? If we don't, perhaps another gay couple will be beat up or a stripper raped or a female student killed. Please, let us not defend what is good about Landon, but ask why, why, what happened to these boys when they were on the team at Landon that made them hate women and gays?

Posted by: pharrington | May 5, 2010 7:17 PM | Report abuse

UVA is a cut above! I entered UVA the second year they allowed female undergraduates, way back in the 1970's. How the students responded to the press swarm was wonderful and typical of UVA students - "We have more imptortant things to do and consider and tend to than to get our 15 minutes of fame on TV - we are mourning and we are studying. Please go away, press people" How so wonderfully typically of UVA students, that is why the school has produced the most Presidents of the US and the most Senators of any other school in the US. UVA is the only school in the US, including the military acadamies that has continued year after to year to stick to its Honor Code, abide by it and and always cherish it. That lacrosse player had to withdraw because he would have been thrown out even if he had simply stolen a candy bar from a store. The honor code is so awesome that area merchants give carte blanche credit to UVA students because they know if they don't pay their bill, they will be expelled.

This was a BRUTAL MURDER and anyone out there espousing that "we don't know for sure... innocent until proven guilty" BULL feces should be ashamed of themselves. This kid ADMITTED to breaking down her door and beating her to a pulp. I wonder at what point he decided to stop? Was she still conscious and begging for her life do you think? Or did he only stop when she lay motionless in that POOL OF BLOOD. This is horrifying. You can point fingers at Landon or Lacrosse or drugs and booze but ultimately, it comes down to the fact that this kid has a dark side most NORMAL people don't have. When you are capable of expressing rage to the point where - oops- you kill someone... you need to be taken out immediately. Game over. I hope this kid gets EXACTLY what he deserves.

There are cultural and societal mores specific to the community George Huguely grew up in and the boys prep school he attended. In many cases, family name, money and reputation are to be protected at all costs. That can mean covering up for “misbehavior.” Explaining away irresponsible behavior. Denial of wrongdoing. Buying people if necessary. It is a culture that can produce people who believe they don’t have to play by the rules, can make disparaging and demeaning remarks with impunity, and get away with murder, in this case, literally.
