Va. deputy charged with having sex with inmate
A Newport News sheriff's deputy has been arrested on charges of having sex with a female inmate.
A criminal complaint filed in Newport News General District Court says the inmate was on her way home from work release when Deputy Vincent L. Townes picked her up in his car and drove her to his apartment.
The 41-year-old Townes was arrested Friday and charged with one count each of carnal knowledge of an inmate and aiding the escape of a prisoner. He's also charged with delivering items to an inmate in jail.
Townes has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He remained held without bond Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office. Court records show he has not hired an attorney.
