Va. inmate charged with 1996 murder
Newport News police have arrested a man in a slaying that occurred 14 years ago.
Police said Thursday that 39-year-old Erick Rodgers faces charges of murder, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon. Rodgers is in federal prison, serving a 26-year sentence for a drug conspiracy.
Police arrested Rodgers shortly after the 1996 slaying of 46-year-old Betty Mae Boyd. But witnesses wouldn't talk, so the case was nolle prossed.
The case was reopened as part of an effort to re-examine cold cases, and this time police say witnesses provided the information the needed to refile charges.
