Nag, Nag, Nag

We all know that women aren't permitted to join Augusta National Golf Club. It's been that way forever. Old news.

But does that mean activists such as Martha Burk shouldn't continue to fight for inclusion?

Commenters agree: Girls have cooties.

Well, yeah. According to commenters, this whole women's rights charade is beginning to sound like Mom nagging them to clean their rooms.

rbgu1999: Instead of whining, why not start her own elite country club for women only. There are plenty of female executives who would love to have their own course.

So you mean they'd be separate but equal? How come nobody else ever thought of that?

Claudius1: How in the hell is the cause of equality for women advanced one iota by making it safe for a handful of women who have more money than God to duff golf balls and sip whiskey with a handful of men who have more money than God? Yeah, opening up Augusta National to incredibly wealthy women! Woo hoo! What a banner day for the feminist movement that'll be! That's REALLY going to help the other 99.9999% of females of this nation who don't have that kind of coin. What a joke. Another triumph of symbolism over any kind of substance.
tuffy1: Women complaining about Augusta's policy must have nothing better to do. I'm tired of their belly-aching.

Maybe nobody else is surprised? I just sort of assumed we were all on the same page about the whole, you know, equality thing.

Wait, Augusta has opened the competition to women. I just read about it at http://www.east-coast-bias.com/2008/04/breaking-news-women-allowed-to-compete.html

I heard her cooking really sucks. That must be what she is so very angry about.

It is a shame indeed that the point is missed. Where is that point-of-view gun from "Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy"?

first lines of the movie:

"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the *third* most intelligent. The second most intelligent were of course dolphins..."

Maybe someday we'll catch up Lindsay, though the only reason I'm addressing you as "Lindsay" (like we went to high school together or something), is because I fear placing the wrong title in front of your name. Not sure whether or not to call you Ms., Mrs., or Miss Applebaum. Don't wish to offend either. Even the sensitive among us men are left with unsure footing, something that usually leaves us sneaking away to a tool shed somewhere.

It goes both ways. In NoVa there is an organization of rich, exclusive, and powerful women called the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association that controls George Washington former estate in Mt. Vernon, Virginia. Why is it only for women? Well because of tradition and history. Does this make any sense for today's society? Of course not. I know plenty of men that would love to be involved in the preservation and stewardship of Mt. Vernon. Unfortunately, they need not apply for membership into the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association.

Augusta National a private organization. they have the right to admit whoever they want. Should all-boys or girls private high schools be open to everyone? imagine the outrage at St. Albans or Georgetown Visitation if a boy or a girl attempted to take classes at those schools.

Lindsay (as if we went to high school together) is fine with me, spectre.

And hey, maybe we did go to high school together -- though if that were true, you'd probably know to just call me "Brace Face"
