Redskins Draft Reactions

Mel Kiper thinks the Redskins had a decent draft. Fans aren't so sure.

Here's a quick breakdown of what readers had to say about some of the Redskins' picks:

Round 2, Pick 3 (34): WR Devin Thomas

Not too many arguments about this one. Big receiver, check.

Round 2, Pick 17 (48): TE Fred Davis

congero: The Redskins biggest mistake was picking a Tight End. With Cooley and Yodder this was a wasted pick.

Round 2, Pick 20 (51): WR Malcolm Kelly

talontbo: the three top picks to get weapons... and forget the armor.... O LINE and D LINE.... go into battle with a sword.... and leave your Breast Plate at home.... brilliant...

Round 3, Pick 33 (96): OL Chad Rinehart

Anyone?

Round 4, Pick 25 (124): DB Justin Tryon

Bueller?

Round 6, Pick 2 (168): P Durant Brooks

kathymac1: A PUNTER!!!! Give us strength!
DannyH8r: I'm glad to have the punter. He netted almost 10 yards more per kick than Frost. That's a LOT of field position.

Round 6, Pick 14 (180): DB Kareem Moore

Round 6, Pick 20 (186): QB Colt Brennan

dbeins: Didnt we draft a QB last year too? What happened to Jordan Palmer?

Not much. These days, he's backing up his big bro in Cincinnati.

Keedrowe: I see good things in the skins future with Zorn developing Colt Brennan. Hopefully they will continue using the draft to build a good team around him, and I said FUTURE not next year.
Jason Campbell: And what am I, chopped liver?

(Okay, he didn't say that. But I'll bet he would.)

fmccain: As far as why develop Colt when we are still developing Campbell the answer is simple, Campbell is already a veteran QB (though still young) and has to learn a new pro system, you bring Colt in and develope him in Zorn's system (like Collins and Saunders) and if down the road lets say 3 or 4 years for the sake of an argument Campbell gets hurt mid-season we now have a back-up who will not only hold down the fort while Campbells out but maybe lead us to the play-offs.

Round 7, Pick 35 (242): DE Rob Jackson

TheSquire: Sweet. A defensive end so unremarkable that he warrants only one sentence in this story. He should really help out the non-existent D-line pass rush.

Round 7, Pick 42 (249): DB Chris Horton

congero: Is there any way to draft a new owner?

What does everyone else think?

The Post needs to get another Redskins blog. La Canfora's used to be informative, but he has abandoned analysis for negativity. The national writers gave the Skins high marks for the draft; nothing but discouraging words from the Post.

I used to read every word written about the Skins, last season I mostly just watched the games and skipped JLC's drivel.

AMEN, PowerBoater! JLC is a great writer, but seriously... leave the blatant - unsupported negativity out of it and analyze something for once. Very good point!

Almost every expert is giving Zorn and his first draft the thumbs up. Everyone with the exception of Redskins fans themselves. I'm giving Zorn the benefit of the doubt here, and am looking forward to see what he does with some undrafted free agents.

Unless they address their OL needs (depth) and DL needs (size) as other teams cut players, their draft was a bust.

More WR? Like you dont have already 5 of them.

I can see the TE, since Cooley is a horrible blocker.

But all the WR and TE of the world make no difference if half your OL is out injured by mid-season and your QB is running avoiding being sacked before he can actually throw the ball; and any S and CB is toast on coverage if the DL cant pressure the opposing teams QB in a consistent manner.

I think too many Redskins fans are drinking the Kool-Aid. JLC's analysis was spot on. How are the skins supposed to win games without generating a pass rush. The lack of a pass rusher has killed us year in and year out. What JLC pointed out is why draft 2 receivers and a TE when we already have those positions soldified, when we can fill positions of need like a DT and DE. That is why an owner with no football background should not be involved with personnel decisions. Anyone who thinks the Redskins had a good draft obviously don't care about the Redskins returning to glory. I gave this draft a D-.

I think that this was a pretty darn good draft. A solid "B". I would have gone for a DE in the second and a LB in the 6th instead of the QB. We do have depth on the OL. The funny thing is we need the receivers so why all the belly aching. ARE isn't a full time receiver and Moss (much as I like him) can't get past the hammy problems. We gpt two young gifted players. We still have some cap space left so lets see what the FO does with that. There will be a few surprises come Jun 1st. I have to say thanks to the Bungels for NOT taking our offer.

I too am sick of La Canfora's negativity. So I thought I'd check this blog out. Think about it this way . . . With Zero first round picks, the Redskins got 3 players who were rated the #1 prospect at their positions (Thomas, Davis, Brooks).
Has a team ever been able to say that?

Not only is Mel Kiper giving the Skins high marks, but every other site I've seen is as well. Heck Yahoo! Sports had Zorns' picture up yesterday when they ranked their draft day successes.

Of course the Skins didn't address all their needs, but they simply were never going to be able to plug all the holes through the draft.

WR was a huge need (and not a we only need 1 sort of need).

You can argue that the D-Line could have been addressed in the middle rounds, but first time Frost shanks a punt in Preseason and people will be love having the #1 Punter prospect there.

Colt Brennan was also a great pick. Rated low enough that he is no threat to Cambell down the road, but could also develop into a solid backup, and maybe even be dealt for a high pick down the road if he never gets a shot here (e.g. Matt Shaub).

OL really was not as huge of a need as people made it sound, and if Rinehart works out, then you've got two future starters (Rinehart and Heyer) to serve as depth for this year.

with the plethora of o-line projects, maybe the Danny should take out a life insurance policy on Buges.
