Does Fred Davis Deserve More Beauty Sleep Than the Rest of Us?

Question: Is it a big deal that Redskins rookie tight end Fred Davis may or may not have overslept, but definitely missed Sunday's practice?

Apparently not. And here I thought Redskins fans would have sent out an Amber Alert.

kingly0577@yahoo.com: Man we are uptight in this town. Ok! He overslept and I am sure he was told off by the coach and it probably won't happen again. Please let's not make this kid out to be a criminal because of a mistake we could all make.
jjhare: If my being late for work because I slept in was a news story in my early 20s, you'd all know my name. If anything about professional sports bothers me it's the judgmental attitude towards players. Aren't we all idiots in our twenties?

We most certainly are, but we're not all idiots in our twenties making millions of dollars to do what we love. Set the alarm clock. Hit the snooze button if you have to, but then get out of bed and earn that bacon.

andypitt: It's good to see some serious investigative reporting that can still surface events that have such a major impact on our lives. Imagine if this situation had gone unnoticed for a few days or even completely overlooked. There is a Pulitzer in here somewhere mark my words.

Here's the thing, though: We've only been told by the Redskins that Davis overslept. Now I'm not saying the Redskins aren't a completely trustworthy news source (yes I am), but isn't it possible that there's more to the story? Where's your Pulitzer now, andypitt?

Reader MKadyman is with me:

MKadyman: On the night before you report to your real first job you stay out late and then "oversleep"? I doubt it. There is more to this than oversleeping.

Post reporter Paul Tenorio, who has been covering minicamp, has this to say about the saga:

It's interesting; certainly, to hear the Redskins say the rookie overslept. While that may be the case, there are questions surrounding the episode. Why didn't his roommate -- whom Davis' brother spoke to -- wake him up? Why did it take so long to locate the kid if he was just oversleeping in his room? Did he request a single room? Obviously, there are probably some parts of the story that are being lost in this whole "he overslept" explanation.

Either way, it's not the best first impression for Davis to make. As Mister Irrelevant puts it:

This is a tremendous way to endear yourself to a fan base which is still trying to understand why you're on this team.

I agree Rod, but you know how Redskins fans react.

If indeed, he really just overslept, it's probably not that big a deal. Zorn probably chewed him out and will make him do some extra up-downs or sprints.

This can happen to anyone once, so hopefully that's all it is.

If this is the biggest off-field problem we have this offseason, then I'm all gravy.

Lindsay, I do like the theory about the Chris Cooley sabotage. Perhaps Southeast Jerome had a hand in it as well?

This is no standard sleeping snafu. There's something sordid about Freddy. I'm thinking dungeon, red rubber ball gag, leather-clad gimp, and eventual rescue by samurai sword-wielding Skins folk.

Oy... we still have four more months until football???

Other teams also thought Davis was a talent but were reluctant to take him early because of character issues. I guess they were right! Way to go Snyderatto.

this isn't a mountain. this isn't a molehill, either.

its like my Chief told me when i was younger than 22, "Once is a mistake, twice is a problem, and three times is an issue. lets not have a problem." He didn't. if i could nearn that at 19 with only my E-3 paygrade at stake, i certainly hope Mr. Evans can learn it with all the money he has on the table.

"LEAVE THAT KID ALONE IF YOU WANT TO COME AFTER SOMEBODY COME AFTER ME!!!!! IMA MAN IM 40!!!!!!!!"

Hilarious... although he's been topped by Ozzie Guillen

The truth is: His roommate wouldn't shut up that night. He got up and asked the desk clerk if he could get another room. He went to that room but forgot to ask for a wake up call. When the Redskins tried to find him, he wasn't in the room he was supposed to be in and that is why they had to try to track him down. He was just sleeping in the wrong room number.

so is anybody going to bid on the CHISOX blowup dolls on ebay??

I think it is crazy how a guy oversleeping gets so much attention from everyone.

1. I tend to believe what was reported. He had a roommate that wouldn't shut up and switched to a different room.

2. The guy came in from the west coast. waking up at 11 am EST is waking up at 8 am EST.

3. Given that he probably spent the previous day at mini-camp, his body was probably exhausted.

The thing that upsets me is that we are going to have to hear about this story for years and years. Almost anytime you see him in a game, someone will mention oversleeping at minicamp, writers will write about it for their articles. It was a mistake. Let's not blow it up into a huge story & hold it against him.
