Before He Was Mayor

At a news conference today to announce the release of the city's 2008 Summer Fun Activity Guide, Mayor Adrian Fenty, addressing a group of about 100 youth on spring break at the Fort Davis Recreation Center in Southeast, revealed that he spent a summer as a lifeguard at the public pool at East Potomac Park. It was during the summer before he enrolled at Howard Law School, Fenty said, and he was about 22 or 23 years old. Asked afterward whether he ever had to save anyone, Fenty said he jumped in once.

"One time I dove in to save a kid in the deep end who couldn't swim," the mayor said. Another time, he added, he reached in from the pool deck to pull a swimmer to safety. Who knew that Fenty was so civic-minded even back then?
