Nationals Traffic Jam?
City officials are nervous about this weekend's opening of Nationals Park. Will the 41,000 fans expected for Saturday's exhibition game against the Orioles overwhelm the neighborhood around the new ballpark on South Capitol Street SE?
A police helicopter will be flying above Saturday's game, sending a video feed of the roads leading to the ballpark to transportation planners. And after the game, police, traffic experts and team officials plan a post-midnight evaluation session.
They have only hours to contemplate changes in traffic patterns before it happens all over again: The official Nationals opener is Sunday, against the Atlanta Braves at 8 p.m.
Mayor Adrian Fenty (D) and Nationals executives are pushing Metro as the way to go the park. New Metro SmarTrip cars commemorating the new stadium went on sale last week.
An easy way to figure out the best way to get to the ballpark is the Nationals website. It offers an interactive map listing parking lots for season ticket holders, Metro stations with walking times to the ballpark and bus and bike routes. www.nationals.com/waytogo.
