A Tree Grows in Ward 5
Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. seems to be trying hard to keep the focus on a campaign against violence in his ward. He said there have been at least 10 homicides in the ward this year. Last week Thomas called for a crime emergency, but that idea was turned down by MPD, which said it has its own plans.
Yesterday, Thomas got together with Prince George's States Attorney Glenn F. Ivey and others concerned about the deadly violence that criss-crosses communities in the District and Prince George's. They dedicated a tree to the fallen.
But some of those present, while appreciating the gesture, said it's just not enough, writes Metro columnist Courtland Milloy.
