Are You a Teacher Ready to Hit the Road?

Are you a teacher ready to take Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee's offer of a buyout? The Post's Dion Haynes writes this morning that as many as 700 teachers nearing retirement are considering the offer, which ranges from $1,000--$1,000?--to up to $20,000.

D.C. Wire wants to hear from you. Tell us your story, and why it's time to go.

No I am teacher committed to staying as I already have through I believe at last count 5 superintendents and 1 school chancellor to date. If I do the math, that's 2 superintendents/chancellor in my 16 year tenure. I will continue fighting for DCPS teachers and related school providers rights as well as the educational best interests of our students.

Of course I am not eligible to retire and I am offended by the meager award that is being offered to attempt to entice DCPS certified teachers with as little as $1,000 and up to 5 years of service in closing and restructuring schools to RESIGN their jobs effective June, 2008.

I encourage my DCPS teacher and related school provider colleagues to not tell their stories here. Let's get on the business of developing our own educational solutions and challenging this less than adequate reform plan which lacks a short or long term educational plan, and attemts to rid our system of hard-working teachers, take away due process rights, and silences the voices and input of our critical stakeholders - teachers, parents, students, and community members. If I do the math correctly, we have 1 more year to go... until our next school chancellor arrives.

Hang in there DCPS teachers! They are offering peanuts; if Rhee really wants us to go she will up the ante better yet maybe she will give up some of her and her cronies' salary to supplement this fiasco of a deal!
