Countdown to the Showdown

The Washington Nationals play the Atlanta Braves at 7:35 tonight, and council members are bracing for the dance they have been doing with Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) all week. Since Monday, Fenty's office has been doling out tickets to the council hours before a game.

For some reason, four council members - Yvette M. Alexander (D-Ward 7), Kwame R. Brown (D-At Large), Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) and Carol Schwartz (R-At Large) - have been left out of the distribution.

So as a united front, the other nine council members have been returning the 19 total tickets received each day. Eight council members, including the chairman, have received two tickets each while Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), known for his support of Nationals Park and bringing baseball back to the District, has received three.

Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) said he wants Fenty to give him tickets for the entire season so that he can distribute them to council members in an equitable fashion as has been a common practice in the past. Council members often give the tickets to constituents. For example, Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) offers the tickets as prizes during bingo games for senior citizens.

So far the Fenty administration has not responded to requests for comment on the matter. Stay tuned to D.C. Wire to find out whether Fenty gives in and gives all the tickets to Gray.
