Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton Responds to Gun Ruling

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) responded with the following statement:

"Fortunately, the expected overturn of the District's absolute gun ban leaves considerable room for new, strict hand gun bans and other gun restrictions here. Despite the use of guns far more often for domestic violence and suicides than for self defense in the home, the Court rests its major holding that hand guns without trigger locks are permitted in the home, on the right to self defense at home. However, because, as the court says, there never was a 'right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever for whatever purpose,' the District may continue to regulate handguns and other weapons in the home and elsewhere through licensing requirements. Moreover, the Second Amendment restriction applies only to weapons 'in common use at the time...that were 'dangerous and unusual.'"

Rest of her statement after the jump...

"Thus, the District may continue to ban and confiscate automatic and semiautomatic guns from all locations, including homes. The decision's most serious effect is the increase in handguns in the home, where guns typically do the greatest damage in this country that the ruling will inspire. Today's decision is likely to encourage law abiding people to buy guns, with the likelihood that the ruling will produce an increase in accidents and gun violence among family members and even neighbors, as some in the rush of anger, fetch the guns to escalate or settle a dispute.

"Fortunately, most handgun laws in the U.S. will not be affected by today's decision. Today's ruling turned on the absolute nature of the District ban and largely has the effect of encouraging the District to bring its laws into line with many others in this country, and to go even further than many."

What a load.
Clearly Ms. Nortion has no grasp on reality, using her as a legal compass only goes to show why this city government is so far off course

Eleanor needs an editor for her press releases.

"Despite the use of guns far more often for domestic violence and suicides than for self defense in the home..."

******************
Umm, it's kind of hard to use a firearm for self defense in the home when they have been BANNED for 32 years! Geez, and she wonders why she's not a voting member in Congress?

I see Eleanor once again proves that her time in Congress has long passed. When not trying to deny vouchers for 2000 of DC's kids, she is off spouting failed liberal orthodoxy from the 1970's.

When will we in DC learn that it is time to retire this tired and irrelevant former politician.

Ms Norton, PLEAZE! "Despite the use of guns far more often for domestic violence and suicides than for self defense in the home..."

In DC?!?!? I don't believe the police cordoned off Trinidad from drivers because they wanted to crack down on in-home suicides and domestic voilence. Our city doesn't suffer from an epidemic of domestic violence - we suffer from a protracted reign of terror by armed thugs who rob, rape and pillage on the streets. But our crappy law made it illegal for DC residents to defend themselves - even INSIDE their own homes! Now the Court has overturned this failed and idiotic law. Would that we could get rid of this ignorant moron who wants to be a member of congress.

So, basically, Norton believes that DC's handgun ban being struck down still leaves room for "new, strict hand gun bans".

Also, since the SCOTUS decision explicitly covers 'Common' handguns, DC most certainly may NOT ban garden variety semi-automatics.

Clearly, the woman is retarded.

Tell that to the mayors of Chicago and San Francisco Delanore Holmes Kelly Norton

Now, what is it that you do for the city?

What would you expect from the elitist, socialist dem's that have armed police bodyguards to protect them?

Remember when uncle Ted's bodyguards tried to take machine guns into the UN building?

Just try taking any firearm, let alone a MG into NYC if you're not a member of royalty and, or from Camelot.

Does this person really represent anyone? Hard to believe anything she said as being true.

Just look at all the gun violence occurring in Washington DC and tell me that it's all suicide and spousal abuse. Looks like felons doing what felons do best. Committing felonies and murders. And you would think that banning guns from the law abiding somehow stops the criminals from getting and using guns.

Just plain stupid.

And she is spouting the same nonsense that was told when Florida went 'shall issue'. But crime has gone down in every state that allows the law abiding to carry guns. Criminals fear the citizens with guns and go to places were they can carry.

Wake up!

Del. Norton: "Today's decision is likely to encourage law abiding people to buy guns, with the likelihood that the ruling will produce an increase in accidents and gun violence among family members and even neighbors, as some in the rush of anger, fetch the guns to escalate or settle a dispute."

Is that what you would do Elanor? You certainly don't speak for me. And damn right I am buying a gun or two.

Gun control will fix violence in DC just like the ban on single beer sales will end homelessness and alcohol abuse.

I try not to be petty, but it is very hard not to smile a little when DC's out of touch/ignorant elected officials get their hands smacked.

Whoa, Eleanooor sweety baby!!!!! When did your brain damage occur? Was it the goal of DC voters to elect the biggest idiot they could find to represent them? I have never seen such a poor grasp of any subject.
Let me rephrase it for ya, Ellie hunny!!! .
"DC needs a new way of taking away any means of self defense because we just can't allow one of our most ineffective laws slip so easily from our grasp"
"Oh, and something about the words "auto" and "semiauto". Those must be important words because I heard them used once. But I never could understand what they meant???"

I think that about sums it up, don't you?

So on the very day the Supreme Court announces their decision, Miss Representative (pun intended) Eleanor Holmes Norton announces her intent to completely ignore it...

Under TITLE 18, U.S.C., SECTION 242 denying the citizens their civil rights under color of law is a federal offense.

It is time for the Justice Department to pay her, and Adrian Fenty a visit.
