Fenty Gets New Wheels
With gas prices soaring, Mayor Fenty has traded in his fuel-guzzling sport utility vehicle for an efficient Smart Car convertible, as WTOP reported He drove it to his news conference at an elementary school in Northeast this morning, where he was mobbed by the media. In fact, his announcement of a summer "buff and scrub" program for the schools was overshadowed by the car.

NBC News4 reporter Tom Sherwood gets an insider's view of the Mayor's new car. (David Nakamura - TWP)
As you can see below, WRC Ch. 4 reporter Tom Sherwood was daring enough to do some "immersion reporting," hopping in for a spin around the block. With the lanky Sherwood crammed into the passenger's seat, there was no room for mayoral aide Veronica Washington, who had to wait on the curb until the mayor returned.

There is no way he'll still be driving that car in a year. Nice gesture but no way do I see it sticking.

Who cares what the Mayor drives! All we want is for the Wife Beater to handle DC residents business and not Developers to take DC and turn it into a Closet City!

We love our Smart cars (we have two)! They are the perfect car for urban drivers, assuming that it is only going to be you and a passenger. The Honda Fit is about the same price and has a back seat.
Nice to see Fenty setting a good example. While this type of vehicle does not help to make the US energy independent, it makes a lot more sense for the type of driving that most people around here do.
We kept our Chrysler Pacifica which sits 80% of the time in one side of garage while the Smart cars sit one behind the other on the other side. We traded a 2004 Saab 9-3 and don't regret the decision one bit.
